A must for new web site developers!

This is probably the first tech manual I've read in which all examples worked!

Excellent introduction into bootstrap and a must for anyone wanting to get beyond "Hello World". I intend to keep this as a quick reference for some of the nicer things one can do with bootstrap. During the last 6 months I have been migrating from server-side Java development into web site development and this is the book I've been looking for. It pulls it all together. I'm just sorry I didn't buy the 2 for 1 version. Now I'm going to get the other book to complete my education.

Bargain-basement way to learn Bootstrap quickly

A good learning resource for a very low price. The examples are generally clear and straightforward. The English is a bit halting in just a few spots but 99% of the time, the language is clear. Examples are relevant and thorough. I imagine you can find learning resources for Bootstrap that are free, but I thought the content here coupled with the very low purchase price made this book a great deal. I've already started on the author's Unravelling Angular and it also looks very good.

One word of warning, you really should be at least moderately familiar with CSS before tackling this book. I suppose it's possible to just follow along with the examples, but if you begin using Bootstrap in earnest, you are bound to run into layout issues eventually, and if you know nothing about CSS, you will have a lot of difficulty understanding what has gone wrong. If you are very experience in CSS, so much the better. The author makes a good case for a Bootstrap user as someone who knows how to build web pages, but with little or no experience as a web designer. Such a person can quickly use Bootstrap to build a site that maybe won't win any awards, but also won't stink up the place. I am therefore the exact target demographic for the book.

the fixed version online. This shows Istvan cares and stands behind his work, customers can have high level of trust in his book, highly recommended.

About the Author

Dawn Griffiths started life as a mathematician at a top UK university where she was awarded a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics. She went on to pursue a career in software development, and has over 15 years experience working in the IT industry. Dawn has written several books, including Head First C, Head First Statistics and Head First 2D Geometry.

David Griffiths began programming at age 12, after being inspired by a documentary on the work of Seymour Papert. At age 15 he wrote an implementation of Papert's computer language LOGO. After studying Pure Mathematics at University, he began writing code for computers and magazine articles for humans and he is currently an agile coach with Exoftware in the UK, helping people to create simpler, more valuable software. He spends his free time traveling and time with his lovely wife, Dawn.

I have purchased close to half a dozen books for learning Android App development.
I would say that *for me* this one fits the best.

I have completed Chapter 6, and I could easily use it as an example to write a simple app for my local animal rescue by replacing drinks with pets. I did find the explanation on page 241 abou the OnItemClickListener to be puzzling. The authors writes that it is a nested class, but even Google's own documention says that it is an interface. I found the explanation at --- programmerinterview.com/index.php/java-questions/java-anonymous-class-example/ --- to be helpful.

I will be editing this review as I continue reading the rest of the book.

I skipped chapter 8 which teaches nested fragments and continued on to chapter 9 which develops a new app.

Because Google has switched over to Material as the new theme, the Action Bar icon pack is no longer available for download at the link mentioned on page 379 of the book.

I was able to find a download link that still worked.
Since Amazon won't let me put a link, I suggest Googling for Android_Design_Icons_20131106.zip

No matter what I did, the ic_action_new_event icon would not appear in the Action Bar.

I had to go to File --> Project Structure.
Then single-click on the entry 'app' in the left-side box under Modules.
Then in the larger middle box, single-click the Dependencies tab.
Then single-click on the entry that has the phrase 'appcompat'; my entire entry was com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3.
After that entry is highlighted, click on the red minus sign on the right-side box.

Android Studio automatically includes the Android Support Library v7 into a new project. Mine does. My Android Studio is 1.2.1.1

After you do this, take note of the last few paragraphs on page 378 in the book.

I found it wasn't necessary to remove com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3 from my project.
Make certain that all the items in menu_main.xml have android:showAsAction instead of app:showAsAction
Android Studio will draw red squiggly lines under each of them.
Ignore those red squiggly lines.
The app will run fine.

Great book. Highly recommended.

I'm almost finished with my second read of this new Head First book. It's an excellent introduction. Like the HF Design Patterns book, there is something about the detailed approach to conveying complex information that really does the job. It's engaging and progresses with those little steps, repeatedly, to drive home essential Android skills. I've been programming in Java for over a year, have taken four OOP courses, including Java, in college, and have read many books on Java and related topics. This works. It is not cartoonish by any means and a great first step; highly detailed, with arrows and explanations that leave no (beginner) stone unturned. Android programming is not that easy, to my surprise. But beware: you better know your Java.

Very good book for anyone who wants to learn Android development. As long as you already have a some experience working with Java this book is for you! It goes through a lot of things you wouldn't find in free resources found online. Each chapter of the book introduces a new project that is not only easy to follow along but also very helpful and relevant to the topic.

Leslie Feinberg has been a leader in the transgender rights movement as long as such a movement has existed. This book is both deeply personal and widely researched. Feinberg examines perceptions of the body, the status of clothing, and the structures of societies that welcome or are threatened by gender variance. The portrait gallery that closes the book contains photographs and capsule biographies of contemporary transgendered people.

Feinberg, a surgically and hormonally transgendered female-to-male and the author of the novel Stone Butch Blues, here effectively pummels several old saws about gender, such as that there were two or three centuries in ancient Greece that constituted the golden age of gayness ("How happy were the gay slaves?" she asks). She also shows the often frantic and neurotic ways Western society clings to rigid notions of gender, while at the same time she describes (though not fully enough) how these notions shift radically from age to age. But her historical perspective can be sketchy. Feinberg, for example, expends little effort in looking into why a notorious band of male Welsh revolutionaries calling themselves Rebecca and Her Daughters dressed as women to destroy tollbooths in the mid-19th century. Though she draws many conclusions from this and other examples of cross-dressing rebellion through the ages, she fails to consider that the readiest disguise for a married man is his wife's clothing. The book does offer an enlightening album of singular people: a female transvestite who is sexually attracted to gay men; a couple consisting of a female cross-dresser and a male-cross-dresser. But Feinberg ultimately leaves too many gaps, both in history and in reasoning, to make her theories about gender expression and gender oppression solid. Author tour. Activist Feinberg (Stone Butch Blues, Firebrand, 1993) here presents a sweeping history that many others have glossed over or denied: she traces transgender lives, identities, and expression from communal societies to the present day. Furthermore, she provides theoretical insight while always remaining accessible to the general reader. Feinberg argues that the current devaluation and oppression of trans peoples is inextricably linked to the emergence of hierarchical class-based societal forms and to shifts from matrilineal to patriarchal social organization. Her book really comes alive, however, through her infusion of personal narrative into the historical material?the book ultimately is Feinberg's personal journey to find some representative place in a history that usually has denied or denigrated trans existence. A Layperson's View of History

History is not only for historians but if one is not a historian one's understanding of events and individuals within their context will be limited. Even then, few historians are capable of mastering the entirety of human history. It is clear that Feinberg has done a lot of reading but it is also clear that her readings has been filtered through two lens.

The first is Marxism. Given her working class background and where/when Feinberg grew up and lived prior to this book, it makes perfect sense this would be one of the lens she views history through. Marxism is still a valid if debated theory of historical interpretation but it is rarely sufficient to explain everything.

Feinberg's second lens is her own natural desire to find others like herself, others who do not neatly fit into the social defined gender categories. While this desire is natural it should never be can excuse to misinterpret evidence or to view other cultures with your own biases. But let's be honest, many well-trained historians do this.

Therefore I cannot fault a layperson too much for historical interpretations I may have issue with but instead I should look at where such information is gleaned. The fact is that the vast majority of Feinberg's statements are drawn from published students by scholars and wouldbe scholars.

What I like about this book is that she attempts to pull together a wide range of information and couple it with the political, social, and economic struggles of transgendered people today. The stories are powerful and pulled from a variety of times and places though I noticed a very large amount of Native American information.

This book came out 12 years ago so I would urge Feinberg to reflect on this and revise it to include more evidence and interpretations as well as an update on civil rights for those who cannot or refuse to live nicely in a gender box.

I'm a 20-year-old female-to-male transsexual. Five years ago, I didn't even know other people like me existed. Now, thanks to this book, I know people like me have been around as long as human beings from the more ordinary walks of life.
You might think that being transsexual, I'd be pretty open-minded, but I must confess that this book really got me thinking about my own chosen gender and what exactly I want do with my transsexuality. Do I want to blend in with all the genetic XY guys after all, leaving no trace of my 'abnormal' gender? Do I really care if people know I don't have a penis? Must I be 100% male 100% of the time? And what is 'male' anyway?
Leslie presents a very personal history of transgenderism. Hir short autobiography echoes that of the many people who don't fit into the male OR female ONLY roles society has pushed us into over the centuries. Being transgendered, I could really emphasise with hir life story, and that of all the other trans* people who have a part in this book.
I'd recommend this book not only to other trans* people, but anyone who is interested in something else other than the traditional gender roles we are given. This is such a different prism to look at history and gender through. I want to major in History now. ::grin::

El primer volumen del libro "El Imperio de Fidel" del general Carlos Peñaloza, ex Comandante en Jefe del Ejército de Venezuela, pone en evidencia el "sueño dorado" del dictador cubano de apoderarse de Venezuela y en orden cronológico va desvelando como el talento político, consistencia y perseverancia del lider comunista antillano, desde el inicio de su estelar carrera, puso sus ojos en Venezuela, su petróleo y el poder económico que ello representaba para sus fines de expandir su revolución a otros países de América Latina. Este sueño al principio bloqueado por Rómulo Betancourt viene a realizarse plenamente al llegar Hugo Chávez al poder (objeto del segundo volumen de la saga que está siendo escrito).
El libro ha sido publicado muy oportunamente en momentos en que
la opinión pública de Venezuela está saturada de información sobre el grado avanzado de la penetración cubana en el país y se pregunta cómo puede un país pequeño, con instituciones que no han podido actualizarse (con excepción del espionaje, el famoso G2) y por añadidura pobre, dominar y dirigir a otro más grande, más moderno y rico. La respuesta la encontramos en el libro de Peñaloza que explora las raíces del problema y nos lleva de la mano a través de más de medio siglo de la evolución de una estrategia política cuyo desenlace final está próximo.

Not What I Thought it was going to be...

Culture Shock is a coming of age story that follows a girl that comes from a neglected home from birth until adulthood.

When I first read the synopsis I thought it would be an interesting read which towards the end it was, however I really found the back story told in the parent's POV, the development of the story, and the development of the characters to be quite depressing. All of the main characters' behaviors and attitudes were appalling and selfish for most of the book and it wasn't until Helen ran away that the story began to really develop towards something more. The author does well in describing the different places in Australia that Helen's journey of self-discovery takes her on not to mention the brief back story of the Aboriginal people's trouble with the Government and the abuse of their sacred lands. All in all the ending was satisfactory as Helen reconciles with her father and manages to find happiness in her life despite everything she has gone through. The book has mention of hard core drugs, murder, domestic abuse, prostitution, abortion, pregnancy, and there are sex scenes. It is definitely not a teen read although it is about a teen's life. I like the cover.

Fae to the rescue 5 stars

H.D. Gordon is a new author to me and I was captivated by her storytelling. The Halfling is fast paced, mystery/suspense urban fantasy that takes you on a wild ride. It has magic, cool gadgets, super swoony men, a kickass heroine, smart and engaging sidekicks and best of all it also has a superhero.

Aria Fae is a seventeen year old, half human and half Fae, who has been banished to the human world. All she knew to be true is no more. Her mother is gone and so is her home. The Peace Brokers she has spent her young life serving for has exiled her, never to return home again. Never thinking how she will survive on her own.

As Aria struggles to accept her fate, she finds herself suddenly thrust into an alien world called, Grant City. She wants to desperately blend in, become the shadow, and hide from everyone so no one notices that she is different.

On her first day at school, she rescues Samantha Shy from getting beat up and forges a bond of true friendship in the midst of confusion and loneliness of this new destiny. Samantha takes Aria under her wings and shows her the ropes. Sam is a geeky, computer whiz. But deep down Sam hides an intense pain that was brought on by the loss of a loved one.

As the story develops, I loved how the author addresses Aria’s battle with depression, how she defined the disease. She portrayed Aria as a strong willed, young woman yet she did not shy away from showing Aria’s vulnerable side. As Aria struggles with what the future holds for her, she succeeds in acclimatizing herself to her new situation with the help of Sam and finally reveals the truth about her origin to her. Sam being Sam totally embraces Aria being half human and half Fae.

H.D. Gordon very subtly incorporate a touch of romance into the story with the entrance of mysterious Reid and charming young Caleb. All through the book I kept rooting for Reid, he played an integral yet elusive role as Aria’s neighbor. Aria manages to intrigue Reid but he keeps his thoughts very close to his chest and never reveal that he knows or that he sees everything. And for Aria there is something about Reid that strikes her imagination and seizes her teen hormones. Whereas, Caleb played a huge role in the story what with his father being who he is. Caleb on the other hand is pretty straight forward about his interest in Aria and he pursues her relentlessly. As Aria slowly starts to make a new life for herself in Grant City, she also makes a new friend in her employer, Rose.

Then Sam, because of her tragic past and because of the Fae skills that Aria possesses, comes up with a plan. She wants Aria to fight crime during her nights and keep the streets of Grant City safe. Sam manages to get her childhood best friend, Mark to tag long on their quest. At first things are easy, dangerous but exhilarating, the trio make a perfect team, each bringing a skillset into the mix. They manage to make quite a dent in the Black Magic market. But little do they know that the main man, Mr. Shy wasn’t a dummy. My heart about jumped out of my chest with what transpires. The true revelation of who Mr. Shy is and what he is all about almost made me throw my kindle. What Aria had to face, how she had to center herself. And the ending and the hurting. OH MY LORD.

The ending left me craving for more and some part of why Aria was banished comes to light. It made me angry and sad and I wanted to hug her and make her feel safe and accepted. If you haven’t read the The Halfling then don’t wait any more, go and 1-click this fastastical story about Fae and their kinds.

I love when a book exceeds my expectations!

The Halfling by H D Gordon is the first book in The Aria Fae Series, a paranormal fantasy that exceeded my expectations with fantastic writing and characters that grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go.

Aria knew she couldn’t run from her past, but here she is, in a new place. She is a skate board riding Fae, part of the Brokers, an organization of Halflings, half supernatural and half human. She is an empath and I cannot imagine how difficult that would be in high school. Her empathy and need to help gets her in trouble, but I love her for it. How can I resist a strong character who marches to her own drum?

She meets up with Sam, a girl hacker who becomes her BFF and it changes everything. I love the little nerd, Sam, who is your typical teenager…except for her supernatural skills. I love the connection that brought them together, but you will need to find out for yourself. The girls fun personalities and watching them grow and blossom as they create their family kept me on pins and needles as I kept waiting for the bad to happen. I know it has to come, but I love these kids so much I don’t want anything to happen to them.

Thomas Reid is a hottie and I think he is holding a secret that will add more to the suspense.

H D Gordon can take a familiar theme and twist it so creatively that it becomes fresh and original. Her descriptive writing makes the story seem real and I am unable to resist being drawn in deeper with each page I read. The Halfling has so much that I love, the paranormal, fantasy, determined women (albeit young ones) and so much more. As the story grows, so too does the suspense and mystery. I never saw where this was going and I love when a book exceeds my expectations. I can hardly wait to see what happens next.

Ok my favorite reads are the ones that have tough heroines. The ones that throw a few punches, fight their own battles. This book rocked so hard! I loved the two male potential's romances. The romance influences was well written. I bet Aria would be great with either of them. And let me the tell you the Best Friend Sam cracked me up. This book dealt with bullies and depression. It had kick but action scenes. So much to love about this book. If I got to pick a character to be out of the many books I've read I'd choose Aria. This book kept me up way into the next morning. Worth my book hangover. This is worth buying right now. ❤️
