Robert J. Schilling is Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Schilling's teaching interests include digital signal processing, control systems, robotics, nonlinear systems, computer graphics, and C++ and MATLAB programming. His research interests encompass adaptive signal processing, nonlinear system identification, active noise control, and control of robotic manipulators.

Bio: Sandra L. Harris is Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at Clarkson University. Dr. Harris's teaching interests include process control, thermodynamics, and biochemical engineering. Her research interests center around periodic processing, control of systems having varying dead times, and the generation of input signals for efficient process identification.

More Mathematical than Practical - I sent it back

I was looking forward to receiving this book. I'm now working with Matlab in my job, but I am not a programming expert. I had hoped that this book would bridge the gaps in my knowledge. However, the book is written in a very mathematical, hard-to-approach style. I'm no dummy, but I couldn't use this book in a practical way. I sent it back - the first thing I have EVER returned to Amazon. To Amazon's credit, the return was super easy. As an alternative, give this one a look: Matlab for Engineers, by Holly Moore. I loved it!

Funny, useful, fun, and really a very easy read. Might make a nice present for that guy on your list with a workshop full of tools, and shoes always covered in sawdust. About the Author
Demetrios E. Tonias, P.E. is president and chief executive officer of HMC Group Ltd., a Schenectady, New York-based firm specializing in the development and application of computer-aided civil engineering and management systems. As both a design engineer and software developer, Mr. Tonias has worked as a project manager and engineer for a wide variety of bridge rehabilitation, site development, and public works projects. Mr. Tonias is currently a member of the Adjunct Engineering Faculty at Union College.

Not a typical textbook

I am a bridge engineer, and I was in the market for some textbooks that I could use for references at work. I purchased this book and a few others. It is a comprehensive text covering a broad range of topics related to bridge engineering, far more than your typical textbook. However, it really just skims the surface. I was looking more for a textbook where I could lookup specific design examples and ideally one that would run through a complete bridge design (or at least super/sub-structure). This text has a few general design examples scattered throughout, but they are relatively basic and few and far between. Not a good text for a bridge engineer looking for a reference. More geared towards the non-structural engineer or the structural engineering undergraduate.

This is a very good, comprehensive book regarding basic bridge design. It won't help you design the next Hangzhou Bay Bridge, but it gives good explanations regarding the fundamentals of more typical bridge design, maintenance, and rehabilitation.
