The 52 Lists for Happiness is even better than the first book

I have a copy of Ms.Seal's first journal book, The 52 Lists Project, and gave multiple copies to friends and family. I'm a social worker who appreciates the value of journaling, both for myself and for my patients. However, I personally struggle with lined, blank pages in narrative journals-What do I write? Do I write entries every day of what I had for breakfast? The "Meaning of Life"? How green the grass looked today?

The 52 Lists for Happiness is even better than the first book. I have to wonder if Ms. Seal consulted peer-reviewed research on the subject of gratitude journals (evidence based for enhanced well-being in many populations). These lists also include suggestions for acting on what makes us happy, and putting positive action to positive thought is almost always a good thing. I highly recommend it for yourself, and for gift-giving.

this is the nicest little journal to open on a sunday; the page holder is velvet and the edges are a rose-gold and it feels very luxurious to write in; it'd make a fantastic holiday gift also!

Hamburg beginnings

This is a thin book but no page is wasted.

Jürgen Vollmer, perhaps the least visible of the three Hamburg Exis, compacts his contribution to Beatles history between these covers. His photos (1961, second Hamburg visit) are more journalistic in style than those by Astrid Kirchherr. This was a direction he consciously aimed for. Interestingly, despite the "live" feel, they were nevertheless posed!

The oh so brief text starts in 1960 and tells of how he and his Exi friends risked scorn and drubbing to enter a Rocker's dive called the Kaiserkeller to listen to sounds fresh to their middle-class German ears. He recalls one uncomfortable tussle he had with Rockers who had no time for the British musicians on stage nor this small group of fans at the front table.

As they get to know the boys, the character of the Beatles, evident even then (1960), is wonderfully illustrated with the "Flea" incident!

We learn that George was aware that under German law he was not allowed to be in the club after 10pm and that he would leave and the others would meet up with him later. This is news to me, as I always understood he was deported precisely because he was underage...

He continues the story with the holiday in Paris where Paul and John met up with him. They soon realized their Elvis quiffs and leathers were not working on the Parisian ladies, so exchanged their clothes for arty ones and asked Jürgen to give them his hairstyle. The sole motivation for the Moptop was to pull the Parisian bohemian girls!

And that is where his story ends. Far too soon!

The text is German and Engish in parallel. Being fluent in both languages, I found the translation to be excellent (very rare!) but the German is stylistically tighter and may have been the original; although the conversations with the Beatles obviously were in English: when John wants to know why Jürgen wants to photograph the Beatles, Jürgen says "for art". John then sneers, "Who's Art?!" - the pun is lost in the German text!

The photos can be divided into four categories: Firstly, of young Hamburg people (good photos, but they convey little of the Hamburg of the time), and what seems to be three separate photo sessions with the Beatles. One was in the Top Ten club, one (2 photos from a reel of 12) of John in a doorway and a blurred George, Paul and Stuart walking past him (this became the famous Rock and Roll album cover photo) and one session with a very young George around the Hamburg harbour.

This book has a place on every Beatles fan bookshelf as the definitive Jürgen Vollmer collection of early Beatles photos. The only distraction is the insecure scattering of large print Beatles quotes to add weight to these photos. No need. Those beginnings in Hamburg, as told by an Exi with his camera and in his mother tongue make this volume eminently desirable.

Bible Prophesy Revealed

My Community Bible Study Teacher had often made the statement that the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament is the key to the rest of the Bible. Now, that was compelling enough for me to go home and read it. The history given in the beginning of the book was easy to understand, but the prophesy given from this book of the Bible was very complicated. I didn't get it at all. Then someone told me about Clarence Larkin, so I ordered several of his books including this one. As I read, I thanked God for his insights. His Book of Daniel explained everything in an easy readable way. It was his last of several bible teaching books. This Baptist Preacher was dying but held on until he finished his Book of Daniel. I'm thankful for that, because I am one who didn't understand, and now I do. And, by the way, my Bible Study Teacher had been right.

The book explores the positive and negative aspects of the relationship between these impulses, which are ubiquitous features of human life, and the requirements of civilized social existence.Whitebook steers a course between orthodox psychoanalytic conservatism, which seeks simply to repress the perverse-utopian impulse in the name of social continuity and cohesion, and those forms of Freudo-Marxism, postmodernism, and psychoanalytic feminism that advocate its direct and full expression in the name of emancipation. While he demonstrates the limitations of the current textual approaches to Freud, especially those influenced by Lacan, Whitebook also enlists the lessons of psychoanalysis to counteract the excessive rationalism of the Habermasian brand of critical theory, thus making a substantial contribution to current discussions within critical theory itself. His analysis and interpretation of perversion, narcissism, sublimation, and ego bring new insight to these central and thorny issues in Freud, and his discussions of Adorno, Marcuse, Castoriadis, Habermas, Ricoeur, Lacan, and others are equally penetrating.

Perversion and Utopia is quite distinctive in its approach. It provides fresh illumination on a variety of central topics in psychoanalysis.
