Snape: A Definitive Reading, by Lorrie Kim

The Harry Potter series may be named after the Boy Who Lived, but if you want to know the story, keep your eyes fixed on Severus Snape. This hook-nosed, greasy-haired, grumpy character is one of J.K. Rowling's enduring gifts to English literature. He's the archetypal ill-tempered teacher: acerbic, yet horribly, deliciously funny. When he's in a scene, you can't take your eyes off him. Snape is always the story. - From the Introduction

In this examination of J.K. Rowling's most enigmatic character, Lorrie Kim shows us how to sort through the illusions and lies to the man who dared to spy on Voldemort. In his final moments, he asks Harry, and the reader, to "Look at me." This book does just that.

Review
"Her book is for everyone: academics, parents explaining the Rowling books to their kids - or, this year, the voting public, looking for moral guidance from a magical realm." -The Philadelphia Inquirer

"Snape: A Definitive Reading is a must read for general fans as well as those of us who have a Snape-centric love of the Harry Potter series. Author Lorrie Kim uses multiple sources (beyond the Rowling books) and includes quotes extensively from the series for an intensive analysis of, to my mind, Rowling's most interesting character--Severus Snape. Along the way, Kim highlights the complex, wending revelation of Snape's past and his role in the fight against Voldemort. This book is quite useful in refining our understanding of the overall plot unity--sometimes it is difficult to remember small but important details when spread across seven volumes. Most importantly, we see the true Snape--a phoenix in his own right." - LibraryThing Early Reviewers

"Praised by fellow Snape-lovers and even non-Snape fans." - Geekadelphia

From the Inside Flap
The Harry Potter series - from Professor Snape's point of view.  What was Snape really thinking during his last seven years?  Can we ever know for certain?

It turns out that we can.  Through close reading of the Harry Potter series, Lorrie Kim shows that J.K. Rowling gave us everything we need to understand her most enigmatic character:  his true loyalties, the nature of his magic, and the grudging magnificence of his love.

About the Author
Lorrie Kim lives in Philadelphia, PA with her clever, grumpy, magical spouse and their Harry Potter-reading offspring, one born between Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince and one in gestation during the publication of Deathly Hallows.

Magnificent Logic
By P. S. Kiesling
I know of many people who still accept Snape's actions at face-value without stopping to consider why he did the things he did, said what he said, and behaved as he did. Lorrie Kim provides an interpretation of Severus Snape's actions that is precise and accurate. His actions in each book are broken down and explained with highly logical reasoning, and each chapter, just as with the series itself, builds on the previous one. This sort of precise logic that is worthy of Snape himself. It is gratifying to see that there are others who view Snape in the same or similar light as myself. While one can argue that you cannot still defend Snape's behavior when he went too far in some instances, one cannot find fault that every action had a reason. Nearly everything he did/said or let happen was carefully calculated, with the few exceptions where he lost control of himself or the situation. That being said, Kim clearly explains how he regained control or used the situation to his advantage.

It also proves that he's human and that, as readers, we have to learn to look beyond what we see through Harry Potter's eyes. When we step away from the situation and isolate ourselves away from our highly emotional response (typically the same or similar response brought on by Harry), we can see how and why Snape did as he did. That is especially important in hindsight now with the series being complete. Lorrie Kim discusses how there is always more than meets the eye with Snape, and as someone who has always read between the lines where Severus Snape is concerned, it is refreshing to know that there are others who can think and interpret and not just blindly accept JKR's words (wonderful though they may be) as they are without the desire to dig deeper for a proper understanding. Snape is a still a fascinating character and this wonderful work makes him all the more fascinating and only reinforces how much I enjoy his scenes in the books. Well worth the read, and the re-read. Any time anyone starts on their defamation of Snape, I will point them in the direction of this book and let them see for themselves how there always was more than appearances where Severus Snape is concerned.

Think about it if it wasn't for the Lily/Snape relationship, there wouldn't be the boy who lived.
By A Customer
Severus Snape is a great complex character. He is also very important to the Harry Potter story. Think about it if it wasn't for the Lily/Snape relationship, there wouldn't be the boy who lived. It was Snape's begging Voldemort to spare Lily and Voldy giving her the choice to step aside because of it, that result in the AK curse backfiring on him and saving Harry.

The analysis in this book pretty much lines with how I saw the character and his conflicting motivations. Is very detailed walk through from Snape's POV of the events in the books scene by scene. Any fan of this character should for sure read this book. Even haters should get it to understand him since they clearly miss the point that JKR was trying to make. The Harry Potter books are about love and redemption and Snape embodies that.

Original and Detailed Reading of a Complex Character
By Amazon Customer
Severus Snape has long been my favorite character in the Harry Potter books. At the time the 6th book was released, I remember the great divide that split fans and readers of the books regarding whether Snape was good or evil. Even after the release of the final book when Snape's backstory was revealed, many remained divided on how to read Snape. Yes, he had indeed been working for Dumbledore to save Harry, but for many his treatment of Neville, Hermione and many other students in his classes was cruel and damaging. Lorrie Kim's definitive reading provides an in depth look at Snape's history and motivations to better reconcile the often contradictory aspects of this sometimes cruel, humorous, pathetic and powerful character. Her analysis is supported by extensive quotes from passages across all 7 books, extremely helpful for those whose memory of Rowling's books may not as fresh.

Scritch Scratch, We Have Nits, by Miriam Moss, Delphine Durand

One day a tiny insect, no bigger than a freckle, climbs into Miss Calypso's classroom. Nobody notices until...Polly scritches, Joshua scratches, and soon the whole classroom is scritching and scratching. An irresistibly catchy text and zany artwork - head lice have never been so much fun! 'It won't help you get rid of the little critters, but at least it will make you laugh as you scratch. A really jolly gift for all those children and parents (and grandparents) who get uptight about nits.' The Guardian

From Publishers Weekly
Taking a humorous approach to an embarrassing problem, this book turns the (literally) nitty-gritty into something witty. When a tiny head louse sneaks into the classroom, it makes straight for Ms. Calypso, the teacher, and her enormous red mane of "cascading curls." Soon the whole class is scritching and scratching. The principal, Mr. Trout, asks parents to apply special conditioner to the children's hair, but the little pests come right back. It turns out Ms. Calypso lives alone and has no one to help treat her tresses. Mr. Trout gallantly offers, and the two fall in love, for an almost happily-ever-after ending. Moss (previously teamed with Durand for The Snoops) includes plenty of solid information as well as loopier touches (as the louse lays eggs, it sings, "Watch the teacher scritch and scratch, When my creepy, crawly babies hatch"). Durand's cartoon humans have Mr. Potato Head features and toothy, ear-splitting grins. The classroom is realistically littered with bookbags, flying paper airplanes, toy cars, etc., and the children pester one another endlessly: "Ruby undid Polly's braid. Joshua painted on Peter's back. And Sammy trimmed Mark's bangs." Zippy graphics add lots of dash to an already funny text; the paths of lice are indicated with dotted lines and arrows, type fonts shift for emphasis, and passages of text appear under, over and around the spreads and vignettes. Moss and Durand win high marks for their potent combination of comedy and candor. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-This book pokes good-humored fun at every parent's perpetual school-year dread-head lice. When a mama louse crawls into Ms. Calypso's classroom, she immediately makes a home in the teacher's cascading red locks. The eggs hatch and soon all of her students are infected. Mr. Trout, the principal, and the teacher send notes home, instructing parents to comb a special conditioner through their children's hair so that the lice will slide into the bath water and float away. This works for the children, but Ms. Calypso lives alone and has no one to help her comb the solution through her hair. The original louse stays there and soon the entire class is scritch-scratching again. The school sends home another note and Mr. Trout offers to help Ms. Calypso wash her hair. They fall in love, get married, and there's no more scratching in Mrs. Trout's classroom. Moss portrays head-lice infestations as a problem that can affect anyone: teachers and students, boys and girls. Durand's humorous cartoon illustrations depict a mother louse sporting a pink bow, gleefully singing and running with her beige eggs in two of her six hands. The diverse classroom is full of many different types of hair-braids, curls, and crew cuts. While the very idea may make some readers slightly squirmy, Scritch Scratch makes light of a "lousy" subject. This is wacky back-to-school fare.

Cute book.
By S. Armentor
I'm not sure that I would have ever found this book had I not been specifically looking for a book on lice. My sister n law is a second grade teacher and her first year teaching she came home with a funny lice story. She kept getting the goosebumps talking about it which was only amusing to me. I bought her this book for her class and she loved it.

Uh-Oh, Itchy Head.....
By Roz Levine
"One day a tiny insect, no bigger than a freckle, crawled into Ms. Calypso's classroom. Nobody noticed..." She took a look around, saw Ms Calypso's "cascading curls," dove through the air, and landed, making a nice little home for herself and her tiny eggs. Pretty soon Ms Calypso began to scritch scratch, and soon her entire class was scritching and scratching as the head-lice scampered from head to head to head. Mr Trout, the principal, sent a note home: "Please comb special conditioner through your children's hair and make it so slippery that all the head lice slide into the bath water and float away." The treatment worked perfectly. "There was not a single louse in sight. They were all gone. Well, all except one!" Poor Ms Calypso lived alone, and had no one to help her condition and comb, and soon, the whole class was scritching and scratching all over again. This time Mr Trout sent the note home, and then volunteered to help Ms Calypso with her hair. They fell in love and got married, and there hasn't been a scritch or a scratch ever since...well at least not in Mrs Trout's room..... It's hard to believe that anyone could author an appealing story about head-lice infestation, but Miriam Moss and illustrator, Delphine Durand seem to have accomplished the impossible. Ms Moss' engaging and entertaining text takes the mystery and stigma out of the head-lice issue, as she shows that anyone can be a victim. Ms Durand's bold, bright, and busy cartoon-like illustrations enhance the story, and are filled will expression, vibrant color, playful humor and eye-catching detail. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Scritch Scratch is a clever, funny romp that takes a lousy topic and makes light of it with fact instead of fiction.
