INDISPENSABLE

Even if you are only slightly interested in Alfred Hitchcock you will find this book enjoyable reading just for the sheer variety of material culled from a 50+ year career. For students of Hitchcock's films this volume is quite indispensable, particularly the HITCHCOCK AT WORK section which includes a 22-page transcription of the director talking with his production manager about shooting STAGE FRIGHT and going over all the logistics of the film even before the screenplay was written. Unfortunately no excerpts from this are presented in Amazon's rather generous selection of preview pages, but have a look at Hitchcock's earliest writings in the preview to see the value of this volume, especially the short "Titles--Artistic and Otherwise" (p 71) or "How a Talking Film is Made" (p.73). The paperback edition I have is printed on sturdy, recycled paper and the binding looks like it will stand up to years of use--which is likely as this is really an indispensable reference book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Gr 2–4—Author and illustrator Winter, known for such works as The Librarian of Basra (Houghton Harcourt, 2005) and Nasreen's Secret School (S. & S., 2009), once again tackles the topic of humanitarian activism amid political violence in this two-in-one picture book. Malala Yousafzai, a young proponent of girls' education, came to the world's attention after being shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012. The corresponding story of Iqbal Masih, a young anti-child labor activist from 20 years earlier, is less well known—and has much less of a happy ending: the boy was shot and killed at age 12. Like Winter's earlier works, simple sentences and repetition ("Still Malala speaks out") give the story an accessible rhythm, and illustrations consisting of bold colors and shapes, each framed by a colorful geometric pattern, indicate moods ranging from the light pink of mourning to the bold orange and purple of defiance. The two stories are linked by a shared, wordless center spread featuring a kite motif from Masih's story. (The attentive viewer may note the symbolism in the choice to show Iqbal, in muted gray, as having let go of his kite, while Yousafzai, in full color, holds hers tightly.) The need to rotate the book physically in order to read each story adds a tactical element to the reading experience. Direct quotes from the young activists appear in red and purple respectively, and while author's notes provide background, this title lacks a bibliography of primary sources. A master picture-book artist introduces quite young readers to two astonishing heroes of the world born in Pakistan...Winter, in impressive command of the page with her spare text and calm, rich, digitally rendered art, offers this difficult material unapologetically. As she often does, she distills the stories to their essences, conveying with very few words the fearlessness and the hope wielded by these children. Iqbal's and Malala's stories are presented as two separate tales, back to back. In a poignant double-page spread at the middle, edge-to-edge art shows each child atop a mountain. Iqbal's kite string has just left his hand; his kite drifts away toward Malala. Malala's kite string is still in her hand, and her kite reaches toward Iqbal...Brave and heartrending. This picture book tells two stories (one side is Malala’s story; flip it over for Iqbal’s), introducing young readers to Malala Yousafzai and Iqbal Masih, two Pakistani children who fought for peace and justice and who both suffered violence...Winter tells each child’s story in clear, concise prose...Winter uses the imagery of a kite as both a metaphor for childhood and as a way to visually connect the two child activists. Wonderful Teaching Tool

We are using this book in my second grade class to teach about culture, compare/contrast, and opinion writing. The text is highly engaging, and the students easily made connections to both Malala and Iqbal. This quickly became a classroom favorite, and several students have reread it on their own.

About the Author
Dr. Debra L. Nelson is the CBA Associates Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Management at Oklahoma State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was the recipient of the R. D. Irwin Dissertation Fellowship Award. Dr. Nelson is the author of over 70 journal articles focusing on organizational stress management, gender differences at work, and positive organizational behavior. Dr. Nelson's research has been published in the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT EXECUTIVE, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, MIS QUARTERLY, ORGANIZATIONAL DYNAMICS, JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, and other journals. In addition, she is coauthor/coeditor of several books, including POSITIVE ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (Sage, 2007); UNDERSTANDING ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (South-Western, 2008); GENDER, WORK STRESS, AND HEALTH (APA, 2002); ADVANCING WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT (Blackwell, 2002); and PREVENTIVE STRESS MANAGEMENT IN ORGANIZATIONS (APA, 1997). Dr. Nelson has also served as a consultant to several organizations including AT&T, American Fidelity Assurance, Sonic, State Farm Insurance Companies, and Southwestern Bell. Dr. James Campbell (Jim) Quick is John and Judy Goolsby Distinguished Professor in the Goolsby Leadership Academy, Distinguished Professor in the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, and Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Department of Management, College of Business at The University of Texas at Arlington. He earned an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of Houston. He completed postgraduate courses in behavioral medicine (Harvard Medical School) and combat stress (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio). Dr. Quick is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the American Institute of Stress. Dr. Quick's and his brother's signature theory is preventive stress management, now in the APA Dictionary of Psychology (2007). Dr. Quick has over 100 books, book chapters, journal articles, and clinical monographs in 10 languages. Dr. Quick's awards and recognitions include Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Beta Delta honor societies membership; The Maroon Citation (Colgate University Alumni Corporation, 1993); 2002 Harry and Miriam Levinson Award (American Psychological Foundation); and a Presidential Citation (American Psychological Association, 2001). Quick won the 2007-2008 Honors College Outstanding Faculty Award and 2009 Award for Distinguished Record of Research at UT Arlington. Colonel Quick, United States Air Force Reserve (Ret.) was Distinguished Visiting Professor of Psychology, 59th Medical Wing (1999) and Visiting Scholar, United States Military Academy at West Point (2007). His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star. He currently serves by appointment from Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on the Defense Health Board's Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee.

Organizational Behavior, Science, the real world, and you

This book is a prime example of how the simplest concepts can be turned into a pseudo academic phraseology in order to look important and to sell a lot of textbooks. The views and perspectives are at best early Newtonian with an understanding of "organizations as clockwork with neat, precise, interrelated functioning." There is no clear distinction between Management and Leadership anywhere in the almost 800 pages, and organizational cultures apparently can only been seen from a Strong, Fit, or Adaptive Perspectives. New insights from neuroscience are conveniently left aside, most case studies, and real life examples pertain mostly to the study of OD and to OB only on the periphery. Almost every page oozes painfully meaningless and relativistic sentences like: "Formal and informal groups form in organizations for different reasons" and "The employee-boss relationship is one of mutual dependence." Really? $200 for ill-stated phrases from the last century.
If the suggested structure of the book is Science - You - The Real World, why would this seemingly important sequence not be reflected in the title? Whoever defines Science in the 21st Century as the "Mastery of objective knowledge = truth", has no clue what is happening in the new sciences and should not advertise their impaired understanding by means of writing textbooks. To be sure, the authors seem to possess a large body of knowledge as they frequently stray into history, but one wonders where the link is to the topics at hand. When Frederick Taylor (1900) is introduced as having a profound influence on the early years of the study of organizational behavior, which really did not even get started until the early 1950 one must question the validity of this book.

Heavy on typos, light on functional information

This text was a let down in many areas. I purchased this text for a 300 level organizational behavior class and was surprised at how much it lacked new research and instead was built around studies and ideas that have largely evolved in the I/O field. I have taken other I/O classes and would recommend other texts, as this one clearly is not the best. Furthermore, this text is FULL OF TYPOS!!! One of many being that Mark Zuckerberg (founder of FB) is spelled "Mark Zuckerman" throughout the text. I purchased this text along with the older sixth edition, and the only difference between the two is that the 7th edition has updated case studies, THATS IT!!! You would likely be able to pass your class with the older edition, which costs $5 here on Amazon. Overall this text was a disappointment and a perfect example of the publisher trying to sell a "new edition" that contains virtually no new information.

Organizational Behavior

I thought this book was great. I have read a couple reviews by officianado's who say that the authors are using old references. To this I say garbage! There have been so many changes in how business has been done in the last 4 years of financial turmoil that I felt all the reference material was great. As a matter of fact, I copied the pages out of the back of the book with all the references so I could circle the article names and do research on the material used. I found the references helpful and augmented my learning process. I look at what I knew 8 weeks ago and what I have learned and would say Thank You to Nelson and Quick for their diligence in writing a good book.
