Much needed book in this field

GM Dai did an excellent job with this book, and I will not be surprised if this becomes the commanding text in this field. Hartmann-Shack (HS) sensors are in pretty much every clinic and are used everyday to guide refractive surgery procedures (i.e. LASIK). So one would imagine that for the sake of the patient, he/she would like the wavefront map that pops onto the computer monitor for the doctor to see to be an accurate representation of his/her ocular wavefront map. Unfortunately, that's not the case these days. GM Dai goes over, step by step, how to get from a raw HS spot pattern image to the colorful surface plots representing the wavefront error that we are accustomed to seeing as customers or researchers. He does so through both zonal and modal methods and describes in detail, the pros and cons of the two. Other useful equations include refractive error calculations and ablation algorithms, which are all very well written.

GM Dai does not have a pure optics background, as his description of EM waves and image formation are technically incorrect. Also, he only included zonal reconstruction algorithm for square apertures (have you seen any square eyes lately?). I have implemented these algorithms for circular pupils, and believe me, it's a lot more complicated. These oversights warrant 1 less star. I also recently met GM Dai and tried to talk to him about my thoughts on wavefront reconstruction. He basically dismissed what I had to say which is not how we scientists should do things - that cost this book another star.

About the Author

Mary Beth Willams, Ph.D., LCSW, CTS, treats trauma survivors in private practice at Trauma Recovery Education & Counseling Center in Warrenton, Virginia. She also specialized in crisis intervention as a school social worker. Williams is well known in U.S. and international trauma circles as an author, researcher, lecturer, and social policy advisor. She is the past-president of the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists.

Soili Poijula, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and licensed psychotherapist at Oy Synolon Ltd., Center for Trauma Psychology in Finland. She has been a member of the Finnish Red Cross Catastrophe Group and Finland’s Ministry of Health Advisory Board.

Great book! There are some extremely useful things in this book! I've had PTSD for a while now and I found this book extremely helpful. It's nice to finally have something on paper that I can go by should of hearing different things from different people, different doctors and different therapist.

Works well alongside therapy

I had been through therapy a few years back for a childhood trauma and thought I had put those things behind me. When they popped back up again, I found this book. Because I had been through therapy before, I was able to go through the book alone without any difficulty and with great success. It's well written, has great supports written into it if you've had the background of therapy. I wouldn't recommend it if you have never had a therapist. You do need the safety net of a therapist if you have ever had flashbacks happen to you. They can be a scary thing to go through. The part on triggers was extremely helpful, and enabled me to determine what was triggering my episodes, which actually recovered memories I didn't even realize were bothering me, which lead to more healing. The book is written so that all parts aren't applicable to everyone, but that's the joy of it. For a trauma victim, it's a keeper, because there are parts you use now, and there are parts you may use later. It's set up to be used in pieces, not from cover to cover. It's a great discovery tool. Some memories may not seem like they're worth discovering, but some are. When they had us set up an imaginary safe pace in our minds to go to when things got scary, and asked who was there, I realized I always felt the safest when my grandfather was around, who died in 1991. I dug out a picture of him and put it up in my hallway. This book is definitely my best purchase.

I had a good experience while working on this book. To this day I haven't finished it. For me, these things take a long time. But I love the approach this book takes. It's a very creative and involved workbook-- turns recovery into a project.

About the Author
Mike Wilks (British, b. 1947) began his artistic career at age thirteen when he won a scholarship to art school. He ran a successful graphic design business for five years before he sold it and began writing and illustrating books in 1975. He rocketed to fame following publication of The Ultimate Alphabet in 1986; the puzzle book sold 750,000 copies worldwide. After eight illustrated books, he established himself as a novelist with The Mirrorscape Trilogy, a fantasy adventure series. The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and many private collections have acquired Wilks s drawings and paintings. Wilks lives in London.

Unparalleled Detail and Whimsy!

This set of books is amazing. I love the talent of Mike Wilks. We found him through the game Scrutineyes years ago, which featured his artwork as part of an object-finding game. My only gripe is I wish the format of these books was larger so that you could enjoy the detail of the art better. The Scrutineyes panels were much larger, which was nice, especially for those with older eyes. Overall, though, I highly recommend these amazing pieces of art!

So pretty

What a beautiful book! I'm not quite sure how I found this, but I have the game Scrutineyes, which is my favorite and includes only a few of these pictures. When I saw the book, I couldn't believe there was a picture for every letter. It is also accompanied by a second book, the annotated version which lists every picture and what they are.
Beautiful artwork and hours of viewing enjoyment.

Astoundingly Wonderful

I cannot count the hours I spent pouring over the Annotated Ultimate Alphabet, starting when I was 10 and continuing through college, when my copy disappeared in a move. I'm delighted that it's finally reprinted, and I can share it again with friends and family. It is an astoundingly wonderful book.

About the Author

Robert N. Lussier is a professor of management at Springfield College. He has been teaching management courses for more than 25 years. He has a national and international reputation for his methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used both personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 400 publications to his credit, including Management Fundamentals 7e (Sage), Human Relations 10e (McGraw-Hill), Leadership 6e (South Western/Cengage), and others. He has also published in top tier academic journals including Journal of Management Education, Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Journal of Business Strategy. Lussier holds a bachelor of science in business administration from Salem State College, master's degrees in business and education from Suffolk University, and a doctorate in management from the University of New Haven. Content is good, needs to be edited

Using this for my Principles of Management class and man is it full of errors. There are some grammar mistakes throughout. The content seems decent enough, however. There are plenty of applications and case studies in the book that help solidify concepts. There are self-assessments too that help with class discussion. One thing I find really annoying is that there are review questions in the chapters but no answer keys that I could find.

Our professor told us that Sage purchased this book from a different publisher and didn't realize that it wasn't edited to the quality they wanted. I think they are working on a new edition for this.

Overall I probably wouldn't recommend this book until the errors are fixed and maybe they add answer keys to review questions. With some editing this could be a great management book!

I really needed to get this book for school, but I didn't have the money to get it. Even used I didn't have the money. So I borrowed this book. I am so glad it was only a borrow. I managed to pass the class and still save money from borrowing this book. I think the renting option is the best form of getting a book. I was able to pass the class with a good grade. Also, I didn't have to keep a book that I would have only used for one semester. And it only cost one fourth of the price the book would have cost me had I bought it new. I was also able to rent it for the whole semester. I cant really go into what the book is about since its a book that you need for a class. Why else would anyone buy this book? I mean, I guess... If you're really into that kind of thing.

This book is really informative, and great even outside of class. I used this for my business management class in a junior college, but I know I'm probably going to go back and use this book in the future.

But armed with a stubborn streak and a knack for great songwriting, Plaskett has kept Halifax as his home, building both a career and a music community there. Along the way, he’s earned great respect: when he plays shows in Alberta, east-coast expats literally thank him for staying home.

I'm a longtime Plaskett fan who doesn't get to hear much about him in my native U.S., so I devoured this book happily! O'Kane deftly balances biographical information, entertaining anecdotes, analysis of Plaskett's songwriting and production processes, and the greater context of life in (and, frequently, out of) the Maritimes. While a love of East Coast Canadian bands will maximize reading enjoyment, NOWHERE WITH YOU (like Plaskett's own wide-ranging oeuvre) should appeal to anyone interested in great music.

Apocalyspe Now - Apparently Not!

Some events happened to me in 1977 that made me feel very confident that many really big changes were going to happen, and I was certain that the changes would start happening in about 1995, oddly enough about the time of this book's publication. The things that happened to me were not in any way the same as what happened to Vance Davis and the "Gulf Breeze 6," yet reading parts of this book, especially the predictions of apocalypse, reminded me of visions I had as well as intuitions i.e, "things are so messed up in this world, it just can't go on the way it is!"
Only it's 2001 as I write this review, and from my point of view none of the big changes happened, and thus while I liked "Unbroken Promises," I was soured by the parts that predict apocalypse and have, at least to this date, been proven wrong over and over. Personally I also don't react very favorably when dire predictions are made and then the "prophet" claims that they didn't come to pass because people "woke up," or whatever excuse can be thought of.
"Unbroken Promises" is first of all Mr. Davis's autobiography. He is a psychic trained in Silva Mind Control who eventually goes to work for the NSA. Davis, who is also keenly interested in consciousness expansion, learns how to go into deep meditative states, to the point of meeting spirit guides, such as Kia, who claims to be from a planet forty-five light years away. Yet Mr. Davis also is a religious, or better-stated, spiritual man, and he repeatedly asks Jesus for help in all his endeavors. To some having contact with aliens while believing in Christ might seem strange!
The real story of "Unbroken Promises" occurs during the summer of 1990, when Davis and 5 other mililtary personnel begin to dabble in the paranormal while stationed in Germany, eventually to the point of communicating with spirits through an Ouija board. They have 7 sessions with these spirits. At first there isn't a totally religious overtone, but quickly more spirits come through, and almost all of these spirits use the names of apostles of Jesus. The messages they give are a mixture of good ol' Biblical global apocalypse, a la the Book of Revelations, along with specific directions to the 6 humans to leave their posts and return to America, to help with the "big changes" that are imminent. They are told not only the approximate date to go AWOL, but also, repeatedly, that they will be protected from danger.
So the 6 do go AWOL, ending up in Gulf Breeze, FL. Unfortunately they are caught, and initially are treated like hardened criminals who have engaged in espionage. After about 3 weeks of imprisonment, during which the story becomes a public scandal, they are not only released, but almost unbelievably are given a choice - they can actually remain in the military or receive honorable discharges (they of course choose the latter)! In short, all the predictions that the spirit guides make concerning their welfare come true (assuming none are omitted, and I question that). We are told implicitly and explicitly that in fact the 6 do have "friends in high places," and one of the important points made in the book is that the US govt. is divided into "good" and "bad" factions.
What is a bit "unkosher" about the book is the claim by the authors (mostly via the channeling from the Ouija board) that Mr. Davis and
company are going to play a very important in the "awakening" of humanity during the aforementioned apocalyse, the apocalyse that in my view still shows little indication of happening. And indeed almost all of the really dire events listed towards the end of the book, such as riots in many major cities, the widespread institution of martial law, and particularly the coming of the Peacemaker/anti-Christ, have simply not come to pass, which is why I question whether Mr. Davis supplies a complete list of predictions concerning his group going AWOL.
Still, "Unbroken Promises" is surely an intriguing book to read and ponder, and I have no doubt about Mr. Davis's sincerity. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the accounts of 3 females who were involved in the arrest of the Gulf Breeze 6 (one who had gone AWOL, plus 2 friends, one of whom Mr. Davis had seen in a dream 10 years before and became his wife!). The final part of the book are the documents that back up what was written about the imprisonment and release of the 6.

STILL LAUGHING!!!

I never thought I'd actually see the day that this load of garbage actually found a publisher!!! I was stationed with these chowder-heads and even went to training in Pensacola with most of them. Vance, while a friendly guy, was never considered anything CLOSE to being a soldier.... noted throughout the unit for being a compulsive liar. For example, he told me several times that he had been on the Olympic Baseball Team, and had written a smash hit song for late-80's popster Aldo Nova. I have NO idea how this guy ever got a security clearance higher than Confidential. He had recently bought an East German Army uniform that fit him, so when this happened, many of us in the unit thought that they had gone over The Wall - it would have been the kind of thing Vance would do... then he would have driven the E. Germans nuts and gotten sent back with a fat lip! Huckstedt and the other young guys were good fellas, I think they just got caught up in something where they felt important and were led on by older soldiers whom they wanted acceptance from. Because of these lunatics, we had constant midnight inspections (they had apparently left word in a letter that others would be joining them), and had "End of The World" parties annually on the day that they had predicted The End would be for several years afterward. Trust me...if higher intelligence from The Great Beyond was looking for someone on Earth to talk to and save, it would have been a group far less pitiful and goofy. The leaders of this thing misled and abused the trust of younger soldiers who had promising futures - and they betrayed their country and uniform. I'm still laughing, with a sad smile. Vance D.... where are you now, tusker?

A must for all those directly involved in education.

Rarely does a book change your perspective on a subject and then provide you with on-going thoughts that then change you, especially books written about education. This one does. It is a must for all those involved in education that wish to further their view of creating learning environments for meaningful lessons. Teachers, preservice teachers, and teacher educators will benefit from this wonderful read. Ayers lifts the words off the page, tranforming them into carefully composed lyrics that are obviously written by a teacher who cares for the well-being of children in today's world.
If you like kids, you'll like what you read in this book. If you want to improve your teaching, you'll receive some great ideas for doing so; expect no recipes or prescriptions, though, because this journey begins with you. Don't miss this opportunity.

Inspiring Read

This book was required reading for one of my education courses, and truth be told, it was very accessible, inspiring, and motivating. The writing is conversational and the tone is uplifting, though with an edge of criticism. It is clear that the author is a seasoned teacher, and for someone like me who is pre-service, the kind of wisdom that comes from his experience is invaluable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is seriously considering becoming a teacher, as it will stimulate many questions about the way things are in education today.

A very challenging book

I really appreciated this book. Ayers is very passionate about a teacher's responsibility to help their students become complete human beings. Reading this book, and Grant Wiggins Understanding by Design, in a graduate class renewed my passion for teaching, which is really a passion for learning. Education should be about the big questions of life, not just the details and basic skills that are tested and required by the state and federal government.

Ayers is committed to developing whole and complete human beings, not automatons.

My only issue is with his emphasis on social justice as the focus of education. While I agree that a concern for social justice will emerge in people who think for themselves, it seems as if his recommendations force this concern on kids a little too heavyhandedly. If we are to be independent, complete people, then naturally what concerns us will not always be the same. Nevertheless, his emphasis is better than many who want us to just teach kids to read words and add and subtract, but don't really care if they can think for themselves.

How, then, can we uncover our long linguistic prehistory, and what can it tell us about language change? This new book, the first in the major new series, Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics, is an accessible general guide for students with an elementary knowledge of linguistics to the methods and theoretical bases of linguistic reconstruction. Fox provides a comprehensive survey both of orthodox techniques and of newer, less well established principles such as the application of linguistic universals and language typology, and quantitative techniques.

Challenging, but it will make you a better historical linguist

As a graduate student of historical linguistics, I thought I had encountered every textbook and handbook of the subject around. I was surprised, however, to find this one. Anthony Fox's LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION, published in 1996 in the series Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics, hasn't gained the popularity of other introductions like Lehmann's or Hock's, but that is a real shame as it is perhaps the most rigorous of them all.

Fox's textbook covers the usual ground of historical linguistics textbooks: the comparative method, internal reconstruction, language contacts, typology, and reconstruction of culture and society from lexicon. Examples are mainly drawn from the comparative study of the Indo-European languages, though Bantu and Austronesian material is also widely used. Like Lehmann in his Theoretical Bases of Indo-European Linguistics, Fox seems to believe that knowing the history of the field and its eminent personalities is just as important as knowing current vogues.

However, Fox's book is special because of the author's honesty about the limitations of each of the various methods of linguistic reconstruction. For example, he explains that the view of the proto-language reconstruction by the comparative method differs from that by internal reconstruction, the first producing large phoneme inventories and the second a simpler inventory. A reasonable reconstruction can only be achieved by a combination of methods. Furthermore, out of all the textbooks for historical linguistics that I know, Fox is the only one that strongly warns the student to ensure that his arguments are not circular. The criticism of glottochronology here is also considerably more devastating than elsewhere.

I would not, however, recommend the book for the complete newbie, as Fox's writing is extremely challenging. Better to enter the field with Campbell's excellent Historical Linguistics, 2nd Edition: An Introduction. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend this book to all who want to refine their skills. I certainly feel that I am a better student after reading Fox's LINGUISTIC RECONSTRUCTION.

wordy and no exercises

The book is not suitable for self-study.
Too wordy, no exercises, not enough examples to make you believe that the decried methods work.

On the other had the book is readable, and it might be that the other books on the subject are even worse.
