some good some bad

My biggest complaint about this book is that most of the songs are very painfully simple. A beginner pianist would probably enjoy these more than I did... That being said a lot of the songs are still very pretty. Just wish they were a little more challenging for a 'piano solo' book. Probably should be called 'easy piano'.

Amazingly Cheap Collectors Item ... but missing one very crucial piece.

With the addition of the never before published "Leaving Hogwarts," this product is phenomenal. They truly chose the best pieces of each movie, however, A "Window to the Past" from Prisoner of Azkaban is missing. For some, Prisoner of Azkaban is the best score, and this product definitely plays tribute to "Double Trouble" but misses out on the other great theme of the third movie.
There are a bunch of selections from the first movie, then the second and third get ripped off. There is the great Spider theme from Chamber of Secrets, along with "Gilderoy Lockhart" and the "Flying Car" that are missing. But apart from the absence of these pieces, this product is a great buy. Retail on each individual movie's sheet music is $15, this book is less than $20 and comes with the best of the Harry Potter scores (for the most part).
I recommend it to every Harry Potter fan, especially for the price. Even if you don't play piano or read sheet music, it is amazing just to have the complete collection in one book for such a great price.

Impossible to glean information from reviews....

Truly impossible to pick an appropriate piano book to play & enjoy, either for oneself or one's student, if you can not see an example of the music!!!

These reviews are worthless. A 13 year old who has played for 2 years could be playing Bach 2 part inventions, or still pecking away at Alfreds Complete Adult Method, Level II.

I have also noticed over the years, that some publishing company will claim their collection is suitable for beginne & /or easier piano, only to find that their measures & notes are larger, containing fewer notes, & the music is printed with biiiigggg not and spaces between each note, while the notes chosen still move with monstrous, unnatural, improbable leaps & sometimes less than harmonous intervals. I believe this is technique is actually HARDER for a beginning pianist, requiring them to visually keep track of their note through more empty space filled with lines & spaces, before finding the next note, while the sound produced does not make sense to their listening ear. This skill being a more advanced special awareness & mature brain acumen.

PLEASE allow potential buyers to see several representative pages of EACH of the different pieces!!! No one would take the time to try to make up the middle of these pieces if you allowed them to see the beginning & end of a song, (for HEAVEN'S SAKE!!!)

About the Author

William B. Gartner is the Arthur M. Spiro Professor of Entrepreneurship at Clemson University. Prior to joining Clemson he was on the faculty at Georgetown University, the University of Virginia, San Francisco State University, and the University of Southern California. He is one of the co-founders of the Entrepreneurship Research Consortium, which initiated, developed and managed the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics. His service to the entrepreneurship field has included two consecutive terms as Chair of the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division (1985 + 1986), special issue editorships for the Journal of Business Venturing (JBV) and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice (ETP), and Editorial Board memberships with the Academy of Management Review (AMR), Journal of Management (JOM), JBV, ETP, and the Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM). His research has: been published in AMR, JBV, ETP, JOM and JSBM; won awards from the Academy of Management, ETP, and the Babson-Kauffman Entrepreneurship Research Conference; and has been funded by the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Coleman Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, Small Business Foundation of America, the Los Angeles Times, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the Corporate Design Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His research on nascent entrepreneurs explores how they: find and identify opportunities, recognize and solve startup problems, and undertake actions to successfully launch new ventures. He is also collecting and analyzing the stories entrepreneurs tell about their entrepreneurial adventures.

Kelly G. Shaver is Professor of Psychology at the College of William & Mary. From 1977–1979, he was Program Director for Social and Developmental Psychology in the Division of Behavioral and Neural Sciences at the National Science Foundation. He currently serves as an advisor to FamilyCareAmerica.com, is a founding director of MBATechConnect.org, and serves as a member of the international advisory board of the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research Institute (ESBRI) in Stockholm where he was a Visiting Professor during 1999–2000. For 5 years Dr. Shaver was Editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and the Journal of Personality. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship. He is the author of seven books, coauthor or coeditor of five others, and is author or coauthor of over 140 papers and research articles on attribution processes and entrepreneurship. His paper on the motivations of nascent entrepreneurs was the winner of the Babson Kauffman Entrepreneurship Research Conference Best Paper Award for 2000, and his course on the psychology of entrepreneurship won the 2000 McGraw-Hill/Irwin Award for Innovation in Entrepreneurship Pedagogy. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society, a member of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the current (2003–2004) Chair of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management. Nancy M. Carter holds the Richard M. Schulze Chair in Entrepreneurship at the University of St. Thomas (Minneapolis). Previously she held the Coleman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies, Director of the Center for the Study of Entrepreneurship, and was founding Director of the Center for Family Business at Marquette University. Her research program focuses on the emergence of organizations with a special emphasis on women owned initiatives. She has published extensively on organizations, strategy and entrepreneurship. She is on the editorial review boards of Journal of Small Business Management, Journal of Development Entrepreneurship, and was co-editor of the 17th and 18th Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research. She co-founded the Entrepreneurship Research Consortium, a cross-national initiative involving 10 countries studying business start-ups.

Paul D. Reynolds is the Paul T. Babson Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies at Babson College (Wellesley, Massachusetts), a Visiting Professor in Entrepreneurship at the London Business School, and the director of the annual Babson-Kauffman Entrepreneurship Research Conference (1996-1999). He was the Coleman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies at Marquette University (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) for five years (1990-1995). Reynolds is now coordinator of the Entrepreneurial Research Consortium (ERC), an international collaboration of 31 university units, government agencies and foundations implementing national longitudinal studies of business start-ups in the U.S. and eight other countries. As coordinating principal investigator of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project, he is coordinating 10 national teams in the first analysis of the contributions of the entrepreneurial sector to national economic growth. He is the author or co-author of three conference proceedings, four books, four data sets in the University of Michigan ICPSR public archives, 25 project reports and research monographs, 60 peer review journal articles or conference proceeding reports, and several hundred professional conference presentations.

This review is on the compatibility of the ebook. If you plan on reading this book digitally across devices, I don't recommend the ebook version. It cannot be read on the kindle paper white or on the kindle cloud. I returned the electronic version and am now renting.

The best photography book I read in quite a while

This book is different. It approaches photography from the artistic side, not the technical side. You occasionally hear comments like "shooting with a small aperture" or "with an off-camera flash", but this is about as technical as it gets. Valenzuela does not discuss camera menus, gear choice, or lighting ratios. If you don't know what these terms mean, you'll need to look elsewhere (these are important things to know, no doubt). That being said, there are literally hundreds of information sources (many of them free) where you get that sort of technical information.

Valenzuela's book rather approaches the topics from a creative/artistic point of view: it teaches you how to recognize geometry in the scenes you are shooting; how to reduce the background clutter by finding "simple" structures that are effective compositional elements; why a picture needs "balance" and how you can use elements you find in the scene to achieve balance; which expressions and messages you send by taking silhouettes; which emotions do you evoke by which method of posing; how do you effectively pose a subject; etc. The book addresses the "why", as in "what's the message you are providing with this method?"; "why would you want to choose this approach?", at least as much as the "how".

And this book does that in an ingenious way: very short chapters, dedicated to one simple concept (shadow, silhoettes, balance, geometry, etc.). You can read each chapter in 5-15 minutes. The chapters are illustrated by pictures that are both excellent, and "approachable". Meaning: while many of the pictures are by all means fantastic, they are not so out-of-this-world artistically mind blowing that you look at them and feel "never in a million years will I be capable of producing something like that". In other words, the author (who is perfectly capable of producing out-of-this-world artistically mind blowing images) choose illustrations for his book that get his points across, and keep you motivated. His purpose is not to prove what a brilliant photographer he is (for that, have a look at the portfolio on his website, you'll be amazed!).

The short chapters always end with an exercise. These exercises obviously are meant to practice what was being discussed in the chapter. But at the same time, the exercises are real. "Take a camera and shoot 5 pictures of squares you find in the room you are currently in". They are of the type that makes you want to do them right away, because you know you can do this, and because you realize that it teaches you something (e.g. recognizing the geometry in a scene).

This book is refreshingly different. I am currently on my third read of the book (got it as a gift 2 weeks ago). First time I read it cover to cover, without stopping for the exercises (which I highly recommend, by the way). For the second read I re-visited some key chapters that I noticed towards the end that I had not completely understood. And now I am slowly making my way through each chapter, actually doing the exercises.

The "Picture Perfect" book would also make an excellent program for any camera club looking to develop an instructional schedule. Highly recommend!

If you only buy one book on creative photography, this is it.

I almost didn't create a review for this product because I wanted to keep it as my own little best kept secret but it's just too good not to share. (If nothing else let this be my feeble way of thanking the author for creating it!)

My husband and I have this longstanding theory that no artist is every really going to share all of his/her secrets with you in a book, a workshop or otherwise, and based on every book and workshop I've ever taken I've found this theory to be alive and well. They give you just enough information to *think* you're going to learn a ton but you're left feeling like there was something missing--SOMETHING they just didn't share that would make all the puzzle pieces fit.
Then in comes Roberto Valenzuela and Picture Perfect Practice. He covers so many aspects of good photography it will literally take me years to master all that he has provided for devouring. That's not to say the concepts he shares are difficult per se, it's simply that there are so many things he covers, that to practice them to a point of mastery is no easy task. The book is organized well, by topic, and he provides key tips for practicing. He's really opened my eyes to the notion that photographers see the world differently. Not just during a session but every day. Every object is transformed by the photographers eye and this is percicely what he helps you to develop: your eye.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. I have paid thousands of dollars for workshops that have contained a third of what I've found in this book for under $30. With this workbook and dedicated practice to the craft, I defy you not to become the photographer you are destined to be. Keep on clickin!

FINALLY!

I have read more books than I can keep track of, trying to grasp photography as an art form. While I love photography, I am not a natural at it and have to work for every shot I get. I've pursued book after book to no avail. . . until this one. Within the first chapter I was already having "aha!" moments.

1. It is presented as exactly what I was looking for----"art"---rather than technical jargon. I got what he was saying because it made practical sense, without algorithms and camera jargon to try to understand in order to create pretty shots that grab the heart.

2. It's broken into a chart in the beginning that can be taken to any shoot (pull out the page, copy it down to a small card size, and laminate it) to remind of every concept in the book. From framing to finding the best at the location you're at even when it seems dismal to unique composition.

3. Each chapter has small bite-sized sections with assignments after each section (which hones in on each square in the chart given at the beginning). The assignments seemed too easy at first (find all the main shapes in your surroundings and take pictures of them) but they truly do build up from the foundation on, to add to a newbie photographer's knowledge and skill building.

If you can only buy one book in your pursuit of becoming a photographer that takes beautiful photos that tell stories to their observers, this is THE book you'll want to buy. Unless, of course, you want technical jargon. In that case, any other book on the Amazon list that came up on search, will do.

PS---as far as the reviews that this is a misleading book because it turns out it's about wedding photography, the author states at the outset he is a wedding photographer so those are the photos he uses to teach his concepts. While it would be neat to see his lessons in NON-wedding photos, they are still so point-on in example of what he is teaching, they only lend to his book, not take away from it. I have no desire to do weddings, yet I still am learning so very much from this book even with wedding photo illustrations. If you have doubts, check the content sample Amazon gives, so you can know exactly what to expect when the book arrives.

Piano playing book succeeds despite itself

The content of the book is very good, concise, and well thought out. HOWEVER, Amazon should label the items that they self-publish in Lexington Kentucky. This is one of several such Amazon-self-published books that I have ordered. It is not disclosed to you when you order. Some have been very expensive. Without fail the binding, paper quality, graphics, photography, and editing are very subpar in these "on demand" self-published Lexington, Ky books. This is no exception.

It is not a "music book" that you can use on your piano stand since it is trade paperback size and won't stay open, even if it were of the quality of a normal publishing house book. Content close to 5 stars. Quality of paper and printing, only a 1.5 stars.

A great book that makes learning chords fast, easy and fun

When you have to learn large number of chords, there are 2 ways to go about it.

- Learn each without understanding the relationships between them. You can certainly do it but it takes longer and it is not fun.

- Learn the simple rules that relates these chords and you can learn whole groups of them. It is lot easier to remember the simple rules than remember notes for each chords.

This book breaks the vast number of piano chords in to well defined groups and explains the simple rules that allow student to move from one group to the other. The rules are explained very simply in lay man terms and not using musical jargon that some other books tend to do. Even with in a given chord group, the author suggests very clever ordering (i.e. Do chords with all white keys first, follow that by chords with white on the outside and black on the inside etc) that is very intuitive, easy to remember and fun.

The book assumes some basic music scale knowledge so it may not be for beginners. It was perfect for me and my 2 young sons who already knew major and minor scales and some chords. The book gave us a clear structure to proceed that was even better than a live instructor. It was so good to see the twinkle in the eyes and the Ahaa coming out of my 7 year old son when I was teaching him from this book. It was even better to see him make rapid progress in learning chords based on the simple rules.

The binding and paper quality of the book does not make justice to the excellent way the information is presented with in.

I have bought many books in the hopes of learning chords quickly. None of them came close to this book. Highly recommended.

Exciting Piano

I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Man am I excited and motivated because of this book. I can now play dozens and dozens of tunes and they sound good. I feel like the musical world is at my feet after learning chords. I've learned from this guy in a short period of time what would have taken years going to piano lessons. The book lessons make you understand and be able to apply them to the piano. I have a real good idea about what I'm doing now and have been shown the piano is played with the brain and that once you understand chord relationships, you are off and running musically - and all of a sudden I'm a heck lot better than I thought I could ever be - geeez, I wish something like this was available years ago. The sax had been a hobby most of my life so I could read the melody but had no idea what was going on with the chords. When I reitred I wanted to learn the piano and found there was no shortcut; until, I found this book. I took lessons for a while and had to see a teacher every week and learned maybe two things each time. Never did completely understand, and then drill, after drill after drill - this was going to take years and I didn't have the patience or motivation. The book changes all that and teaches you dozens of chords in a short period of time and you understand them and can use them immediately and the author makes it fun with a humorus real life practical approach. What a wonderful comprehensive tool this is for learning chords and chord progressions.

I can play tunes I never dreamed possible and jazz is fun, I am really stoked, thanks pianoman Shinn.

Steve Fraser is the author of Every Man a Speculator, Wall Street, and Labor Will Rule, which won the Philip Taft Award for the best book in labor history. He also is the co-editor of The Rise and Fall of the New Deal Order. His work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, The Nation, The American Prospect, Raritan, and the London Review of Books. He has written for the online site Tomdispatch.com, and his work has appeared on the Huffington Post, Salon, Truthout, and Alternet, among others. He lives in New York City.

I liked the book but if I can make one criticism ...

This book has a really important message in my opinion...having been born into FDRs world and then lived through the changes that came with Reagan and after him I could really relate to the points made in how our two gilded eras differ and why. I liked the book but if I can make one criticism it is that as the book gets closer to the end the prose gets awfully dense...sentences hard to decipher, allusions thick as thieves and so on, and an important message gets a bit blurred in the obscurity. Nevertheless I am glad I read it and I don't doubt I will read it again as I do with books that have a lot to say about the times I have lived in.

Great book to understand why the American worker is suffering.

A densely written informational book about the relationship between the working class and the wealthy capitalists that for the most part control their economic fate. The book covers the period from the end of the Civil War to the present. The principal thesis indicated in the title is that historically workers have used strikes, violence and other means to voice their displeasure. Now, starting with the Reagan years people are working longer hours with less pay and benefits and are taking it without a whimper. Fraser gives many insightful reasons for the total domestication of the American worker most streaming from mythologies promoted to workers that the have taken hook, line and sinker from business interests and their political allies. He does wander a little off the topic from time to time.

Scary and a bit depressing — will it wake people up?

Age of Acquiescence

First, Steve Fraser has a word for us to learn: “Precariat.” You can probably see the word from which this portmanteau derives, in turn riffing on “proletariat.” Yes, we are the class of the precarious.

So, why didn’t more Americans join Occupy Wall Street a few years back, or start their own, similar movements? That’s the thesis of this book.

One of the greatest strengths of this book is Chapter 10, titled “Fables of Freedom: Brand X.” Of course, branding and its adjunct, marketing, become fiercer by the day. But, as Fraser shows, their roots go back at least to the Keynesian consumerism which he marks as the real “settlement” of the New Deal and later. He’s true about this in general — American “mainstream” organized labor accepted the offer of a theoretically guaranteed piece of the capital pie on wages, health care and other benefits, while agreeing to keep its collective nose out of corporate operations, unlike in a Germany, and to also play good soldiers abroad in undermining labor movements elsewhere that wouldn’t salute the flag of high-octane American capitalism.

And so, as the Sixties drew to a close, organized labor had trouble incorporating the Vietnam generation into its ranks. Fraser even shows that many strikes of the early Seventies were wildcats, without hierarchy’s OK, and at times aimed at the hierarchy as much as the employer.

"It is only a slight exaggeration to say that the new corporations emerging out of this bazaar of buying and welling were in a new business: the fabrication of companies to trade back and forth."

“Employers all over the country think nothing of violating labor laws covering minimum wages, overtime pay, hours of work, and safety regulations — all the basics of civilized capitalism. Beating the system is the system. No one is watching.” Page 354

And, it goes without saying that this has become true of both Democratic and Republican presidential administrations.

“After Ronald Reagan’s election, what remnants there were of New Deal populism and class consciousness were shuttered away in some attic of the Democratic Party. Legions of working people, whether unionized or like the thirty million or so unorganized working poor, could expect little help from that quarter.. They had been abandoned not only by government but by the political machinery their forbears had created to help them cope.” 361

Fraser also reminds us that finance dereg, along with trucking (bad) and airlines (good and bad, IMO) started under Carter. Ditto for electric utilities.

He then notes that free market thinking pernicious not just in public policies but in exiling communal ways of thought.

As for Democrats becoming more and more associated with social liberalism and identity politics, Fraser notes this as part of the “Southernization” of both politics and of the American working class.

A smiley face on top of this is neoliberalism, which Fraser calls the technocratic equivalent of Marxism. I could go even worse, but that’s a good start.
