THE MOVIE WAS GREAT; THE BOOKS ARE PHENOMENAL!!!

Several years ago, I ran across a very entertaining movie in the Netflix library, JUST LIKE HEAVEN. I really liked the movie; love Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo.

A couple of weeks ago, I ran across some free books that someone had brought to my workplace and left for the taking. I happened to pick up the book, IF ONLY IT WERE TRUE and while reading the outside jacket overview of the story, I realized that it had to be the "inspiration" that made the movie, JUST LIKE HEAVEN.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading IF ONLY IT WERE TRUE and upon finishing it, I researched Marc Levy and found that there is a sequel, IF ONLY IT WERE TRUE 2...I loved the two books; loved the story of Arthur and Lauren.

I really enjoyed the first book.

Picked up the Kindle edition of the sequel for a bit of airplane reading.
Good grief, what happened?

****POSSIBLE SPOILER****

The whole should Author tell Lauren who he is or not dragged on, and this quandary involves Lauren's mother, Lauren’s mentor/boss and even our good (now retired) cop was dragged back.

The storyline was simply incoherent, and at time I was like, “Huh?”

I have two boxes of ESL books, and found that this series is easily the best for its purpose. It is aimed at the recent immigrant who wants to get into the American-speaking community and learn high quality English. It is too conversational and too much at the everyday-living requirements for people not living in an American community.
Many books I have concentrate on one aspect of studying English, but this is an excellent all-around series; you need only this one series and don't need to spend your money buying a library of ESL books.

The Gold Standard For SAT Prep

In 2016, The SAT's go through the biggest change in their history, making a study guide an important tool. Kaplan has been one of the leaders in this space and their top offering is this "SAT Premier" edition. This edition includes a massive study guide, a DVD and the online edition. Kaplan has taken the occasion of the new SAT test to revamp their study guide. This edition weighs in at nearly 1337 pages vs 819 pages for last year's edition.

In addition to more stuff, the new SAT Premier 2016 has a much better organization of information. It's much easier to get through this book to find what you are looking for and get the info you need. As with year's past, the real jewel of this book is the online edition which has detailed video tutorials in each section, which are much more helpful in context. There's also a DVD which is a good entry point and works well to help reduce the stress and anxiety of the test.

Interestingly, Kaplan trimmed down the number of practice tests. The previous edition had 8 total, while this one has 2 in the book and 3 online. The reduction makes sense as doing 8 practice tests is a little excessive. Given how much in-person SAT test courses cost and how much you get in this book for the money, it's hard not to recommend this immense SAT resource.

Great book to prepare you, but went too in depth at some points.

I feel as if the book was too long and didn't focus on main concept as much as it should've. For information to help with the SAT and more, this is a great book to study and practice from that gives access to online resources to help with your studying. I would definitely suggest to start working from this book at least two months before your test date because of the abundance of information. You won't be able to get through everything without skipping a lot if you start like a week before your text date.

A HUGE book. Over 1300 pages. It's full of valuable information, however it was overwhelming for my daughter. I'm not sure it I would purchase this again or recommend it mainly because of how overwhelming of a book it is. My daughter said it as a little frustrating because of the size and so much information.

not bad but could've been better

this book starts off a tad amateurish as Polan tries to tackle the film as a phenomenon first, and then analyze the actual film second. it seems that the author's initial take is that PULP FICTION is more pre-occupied with style over substance but as the film is analyzed in more detail argues that there is actual depth and substance to Tarantino's film!
this comes across as kind of awkward but Polan's writing style does improve the further along you read. i just wish that the author hadn't been so concerned with writing the first academic analysis of PULP FICTION and blasting the slew of sloppily written Tarantino biographies and websites, and focused more on the actual film.
i also question Polan's research notes. out of all the articles used/read there is one glaring omission: Gavin Smith's seminal article/interview with Tarantino about PULP FICTION in Film Comment around the time the film came out. Smith's article still remains, in my mind, THE best analysis of Tarantino's film. it's a shame the BFI didn't get him to write one of these books on PF.

Unworthy of its subject.

There's pulp fiction, then there's worse--namely, thin, obvious, breezy commentary that pretends to be scholarly, or at least "academic." This very slight volume wastes time talking about websites dedicated to the film, then attempts to argue that "Pulp Fiction" is strictly a "postmodern" event to be experienced rather than thought much about (the author's grand conclusion: it represents "style over substance"). I didn't even find the book of much use when I wanted some reminders of plot sequence and characters' names.
Perhaps I expected too much for my money as a result of reading this same series' "The Birds" by Camille Paglia (who obviously immersed herself in an exhaustive research of the filmmaking process as well as the final product). This edition, on the other hand, has the feel of something tossed out in a couple of week-ends.

Deconstructing Tarantino

Dana Polan does an excellent job of breaking down the phenomenon of Pulp Fiction by examining it both textually and culturally, and in doing so, brings the runaway success of Pulp Fiction and the apparent "God-liness" of Tarantino back down to Earth. The book is a quick read, informative, stimulating, and fun. Having been ambivalent about this film since its release, Dana Polan hits the nail on the head about exactly why I both love and hate this film.
At any rate, if you are at all interested about Pulp Fiction (whether positively or negatively), I urge you to give this a read. And, the section on the cyber-world of Pulp Fiction is, at the very least, a humorous added bonus.
