Helpful, practical and modern advice

As a bride-to-be wading through the dozens of issues that come with planning a wedding, Marcy Blum's WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES has already proven very helpful! Though I have several other books geared toward orchestrating the big day, I appreciated that Blum blended etiquette and history with her tips.

Broken down into easy-to-digest chapters with subheadings about issues as diverse as deciding whether to change your name, what to include in welcome bags for guests and how to (tactfully) let guests know that children aren't invited to receptions, WEDDING PLANNING proved especially helpful in guiding me toward the appropriate wording for wedding invitations.

The guide is a quick read that can be picked up at various points in the wedding-planning process -- so whether you're newly-engaged or already locked into a time, date and place, I think there are nuggets of help for everyone. The guide provides tips for same-sex weddings and celebrations across different faiths, too. I'd already sent save-the-dates and made major decisions when I received the book, but I still found plenty of good advice -- especially on how and why to register for gifts. Blum doesn't get carried away with etiquette or "this is how it SHOULD be done," but she does do a great job of explaining what the "traditional" methods are and contrasts them with more modern approaches. Basically: something for everyone.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the process of planning your big day, WEDDING PLANNING FOR DUMMIES could be a valuable resource for organizing your thoughts and creating an event that is meaningful for you and your beloved. It felt very inclusive and thoughtful, and I dog-eared many pages to return to as we get closer to our wedding.

Thank god my (future) MIL found this book for me!

My (future) mother-in-law gave me this book, and boy am I glad she did! Anyone involved in planning a wedding can benefit from this book. It addresses true-to-life issues that everyone deals with during the planning process. This book calmed me down, and helped me feel more secure about the decisions I was making!

If you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at ...

I'm not a wedding person, per se. In fact some of them I've attended are what nightmares are made of. I can think of one in particular that had people dissing it for ages. This was wrong, that was wrong, so-and-so was offended, etc. The last wedding I went to was so awe-inspiring and memorable that I wouldn't mind going to it again. Undoubtedly, the reason it was such an overwhelming success was because of the planning that went into it. No, it wasn't the result of a wedding planner, but one planned by members of both families. They simply did their homework.

Let's face it, aside from watching numerous episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress," I know nothing about planning weddings. I can tell the difference between a ball gown and a mermaid, but formulating an invitation or scheduling the actual wedding day I am and would be clueless if I didn't study up. I will be the mother of the groom and, provided the lovely couple doesn't elope, I'll be planning it with his future mother-in-law. I definitely selected this book with a purpose in mind. Rather than hysterically flounder when the next "big event" comes up, I'll be prepared.

Yes, there are a few of those cartoons we all appreciate, but fortunately most of the visuals are useful ones. For example, there is a step-by-step one of how one ties the "Four-in-Hand Knot" (it's not something he can do.) There are numerous informative sidebars, tips, tables, and cautionary notes to take a look at. The titles of certain sections are understandably cutesy ("Happy trains to you"), but the information is cogent and quite well-organized. In the back of the book is a very expansive index, something I certainly appreciate.

Planning a wedding does take a lot of effort and simply browsing this book gave me an excellent idea why that one wedding was a disaster. On the other hand, it also told me just why the other one was such a resounding success. Planning, planning, planning. As far as I see it, this book gives people options. When you read this book you can make your wedding tailor-made to fit your budget and whatever style you desire. If you find one area you want to focus on, you can always head to the Internet and expand upon it. There are several recommended websites to explore. In a nutshell, if you are in the throes of planning a wedding or want to plan one in the future this is *the* book to take a look at, especially if you are a wedding dummy like me. Take the effort and you might have one of those memorable weddings instead of a disastrous one ... believe me, we've all seen them and they aren't pretty.

The third book in the Ranger's Apprentice series features a dual story, switching between the ranger's apprentice, Will, accompanied by princess Evanlyn, and the ranger, Halt, accompanied by Will's friend Horace, a young knight-in-training. After an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the ship where they are captives, Will and Evanlyn are taken to Skandia and put to work as slaves. Meanwhile, Halt and Horace ride to the rescue, or at least toward the rescue, only to be detained by a series of petty thieves and a nefarious knight. Although both strands of narrative feature journeys, each provides its own challenges for the characters and pleasures for readers. John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer. He currently lives in the suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

Halt stood motionless against the massive trunk of an oak tree as the bandits swarmed out of the forest to surround the carriage. He was in full view but nobody saw him. In part this was due to the fact that the robbers were totally intent on their prey, a wealthy merchant and his wife. For their part, they were equally distracted, staring with horror at the armed men who now surrounded their carriage in the clearing.

But in the main, it was due to the camouflage cloak that Halt wore, its cowl pulled up over his head to leave his face in shadow, and the fact that he stood absolutely stock-still. Like all Rangers, Halt knew the secret of merging into the background lay with the ability to remain unmoving, even when people seemed to be looking straight at him. Believe you are unseen, went the Ranger saying, and it will be so.

A burly figure, clad entirely in black, now emerged from the trees and approached the carriage. Halt’s eyes narrowed for a second, then he sighed silently. Another wild goose chase, he thought. The figure bore a slight resemblance to Foldar, the man Halt had been pursuing since the end of the war with Morgarath. Foldar had been Morgarath’s senior lieutenant. He had managed to escape capture when his leader died and his army of sub-human Wargals faded away.

But Foldar was no mindless beast. He was a thinking, planning human being—and a totally warped and evil one. The son of a noble Araluan family, he had murdered both his parents after an argument over a horse. He was barely a teenager at the time and he had escaped by fleeing into the Mountains of Rain and Night, where Morgarath recognised a kindred spirit and enlisted him. Now he was the sole surviving member of Morgarath’s band and King Duncan had made his capture and imprisonment a number one priority for the Kingdom’s armed forces.

The problem was, Foldar impersonators were springing up everywhere—usually in the form of everyday bandits like this one. They used the man’s name and savage reputation to strike fear into their victims, making it easier to rob them. And as each one sprang up, Halt and his colleagues had to waste time tracking them down. He felt a slow burning of anger at the time he was wasting on these minor nuisances. Halt had other matters to attend to. He had a promise to keep and fools like this were preventing him doing so.

The fake Foldar had stopped by the carriage now. The black cloak with its high collar was somewhat similar to the one Foldar wore. But Foldar was a dandy and his cloak was immaculate black velvet and satin, whereas this was simple wool, badly dyed and patched in several places, with a collar of crudely tanned black leather. The man’s bonnet was unkempt and badly creased as well, while the black swan’s feather that adorned it was bent in the middle, probably where some careless bandit had sat on it. Now the man spoke, and his attempt to imitate Foldar’s lisping, sarcastic tones was spoiled by his thick rural accent and clumsy grammar.

“Step down from the carriage, good sor and mad’m,” he said, sweeping a clumsy bow. “And fear not, good lady, the noble Foldar ne’er harms one as fair as thee art.” He attempted a sardonic, evil laugh. It came out more as a thin cackle.

The “good lady’ was anything but fair. She was middle aged, overweight and plain in the extreme. But that was no reason why she should be subjected to this sort of terror, Halt thought grimly. She held back, whimpering with fear at the sight of the black figure before her. “Foldar’ took a pace forward, his voice harsher, his tone more threatening. “Get down, missus!” he shouted. “Or I’ll hand you your husband’s ears!”

His right hand dropped to the hilt of a long dagger in his belt. The woman cried out and cowered further back into the carriage. Her husband, equally terrified and more than fond of his ears where they were, was trying to push her towards the carriage door. Enough, Halt thought. Satisfied that no one was looking in his direction, he nocked an arrow, drew and sighted in one economical motion, and released.

“Foldar’, real name Rupert Gubblestone, had a brief impression of something flashing past, just in front of his nose. Then there was an almighty jerk on the raised collar of his cloak and he found himself pinned against the carriage by a quivering black arrow that thudded into the wood. He gave a startled yelp, lost his balance and stumbled, saved from falling by his cloak, which now began to choke him where it fastened around his neck.

As the other bandits turned to see where the arrow had come from, Halt stepped away from the tree. Yet to the startled robbers, it seemed as if he had stepped out of the massive oak.

“King’s Ranger!” Halt called. “Drop your weapons.”

There were ten men, all armed. Not a single one thought to disobey the order. Knives, swords and cudgels clattered to the ground. They had just seen a first-hand example of a Ranger’s black magic: the grim figure had stepped clean out of the living trunk of an oak tree. Even now, the strange cloak that he wore seemed to shimmer uncertainly against the background, making it difficult to focus on him. And if sorcery weren’t enough to compel them, they could see a more practical reason—the massive longbow, with another black-shafted arrow already on the string.

“On the ground, belly down! All of you!” The words cut at them like a whip and they dropped to the ground. Halt pointed to one, a dirty-faced youth who couldn’t have been more than fifteen.

“Not you!” he said and the boy hesitated, on his hands and knees. “You take their belts and tie their hands behind them.”

The terrified boy nodded several times, then moved towards the first of his prone comrades. He stopped as Halt gave him a further warning.

“Tie them tight!” he said. “If I find one loose knot, I’ll . . .” He hesitated for a second, while he framed a suitable threat, then continued, “I’ll seal you up inside that oak tree over there.”

That should do it, he thought. He was aware of the effect that his unexplained appearance from the tree had on these uneducated country folk. It was a device he had used many times before. Now he saw the boy’s face whiten with fear under the dirt and knew the threat was effective. He turned his attention to Gubblestone, who was plucking feebly at the thong securing his cloak as it continued to choke him. He was already red in the face, his eyes bulging.

They bulged further as Halt unsheathed his heavy saxe knife.

“Oh, relax,” said Halt irritably. He slashed quickly through the cord and Gubblestone, suddenly released, fell awkwardly to the ground. He seemed content to stay there, out of the reach of that gleaming knife. Halt glanced up at the occupants of the carriage. The relief on their faces was all too obvious.

“I think you can be on your way if you like,” he said pleasantly. “These idiots won’t bother you any further.”

The merchant, remembering guiltily how he had tried to shove his wife out of the carriage, tried to cover his discomfort by blustering.

“They deserve hanging, Ranger! Hanging, I say! They have terrified my poor wife and threatened my very person!”

Halt eyed the man impassively until the outburst was finished.

“Worse than that,” he said quietly, “they’ve wasted my time.”

“The answer is no, Halt,” said Crowley. “Just as it was the last time you asked.”

He could see the anger in every line of Halt’s body as his old friend stood before him. Crowley hated what he had to do. But orders were orders and, as the Ranger Commandant, it was his job to enforce them. And Halt, like all Rangers, was bound to obey them.

“You don’t need me!” Halt burst out. “I’m wasting time hunting these imitation Foldars all over the Kingdom when I should be going after Will!”

“The King has made Foldar our number one priority,” Crowley reminded him. “Sooner or later, we’ll find the real one.” Halt made a dismissive gesture. “And you have forty-nine other Rangers to do the job!” he said. “For God’s sake, that should be enough.”

“King Duncan wants the other forty-nine. And he wants you. He trusts you and depends on you. You’re the best we have.”

“I’ve done my share,” Halt replied quietly and Crowley knew how much it hurt the other man to say those words. He also knew that his best reply would be silence—silence that would force Halt further into the sort of rationalisation that Crowley knew he hated. “The Kingdom owes that boy,” Halt said, with a little more certainty in his tone.

“The boy is a Ranger,” Crowley said coldly.

“An apprentice,” Halt corrected him and now Crowley stood, knocking his chair over with the violence of his movement.

“A Ranger apprentice assumes the same duties as a Ranger. We always have, Halt. For every Ranger, the rule is the same: Kingdom first. That’s our oath. You took it. I took it. And so did Will.”

There was an angry silence between the two men, made all the uglier by the years they had lived as friends and comrades. Halt, Crowley realised, was possibly his closest friend in the world. Now here they were, trading bitter words and angry arguments. He reached behind him and straightened the fallen chair, then made a gesture of peace to Halt.

“Look,” he said in a milder tone, “just help me clear up this Foldar business. Two months, maybe three, then you can go after Will, with my blessing.” Halt’s grizzled head was already shaking before he’d finished. “In two months he could be dead. Or sold on as a slave and lost forever. I need to go now while the trail is still warm. I promised him,” he added after a pause, his voice thick with misery.

“No,” said Crowley, with a note of finality. Hearing it, Halt squared his shoulders.

“Then I’ll see the King,” he said.

Crowley looked down at his desk.

“The King won’t see you,” he said flatly. He looked up and saw the surprise and betrayal in Halt’s eyes.

“He won’t see me? He refuses me?” For over twenty years, Halt had been one of the King’s closest confidants, with constant, unquestioned access to the royal chambers. “He knows what you’ll ask, Halt. He doesn’t want to refuse you, so he refuses to see you.”

Now the surprise and betrayal were gone from Halt’s eyes. In their place was anger.

Bitter anger.

“Then I’ll just have to change his mind,” he said quietly.

Ice bound Land

I chose this rating because the book had a very strong plot and structure. But, at times the book was a little slow and boring. I liked the many different sentence structures and length which made the story run smoothly. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and adventure books and someone who can commit to a long series.

I like the characters and the content

This whole series is sort of intriguing, but not really gripping. I like the characters and the content, I just don't really believe it. Good for a rainy day though.

If you are a food entrepreneur like myself, this is a tremendous resource. We should all be thanking Will for writing this book. Using a "co-man" is a complex and risky undertaking especially for first timers and this book gives us a good understanding of what the process is like. Madden writes in a fashion that is easy to understand and entertaining. I highly recommend it...

Separating the Con Man from the Co Man: How to Source a Contract Manufacturer is a niche book designed to help anyone in the food industry who has reached a point where they are ready to source a co-manufacturer. This can be an overwhelming feeling but this book helps navigate through the process. Ideal for both the experienced food entrepreneur and a novice who is just beginning the process, this book is helpful, provides excellent resources and offers solid, experienced advice. It discusses which tools and resources work best (and which ones don’t!).
I trust William Madden’s depth of knowledge and history in the food industry and his writing style is easy to follow and makes for an interesting read. I found this book to be extremely helpful and informative. It discusses various challenges you can expect to face when looking for a co-manufacturer as well as offers advice on ways to avoid these hurdles before you encounter them. Additionally, the book offers very specific and direct ways to handle these challenges if/when you do encounter them. This book will definitely save you time, money and stress. The practical knowledge I got from this book is equivalent to a 4-year college degree!

About the Author
Randall Schaetzl is a Professor of Geography and Geosciences at Michigan State University. His research has been published in all the leading soils, geomorphology, and geography journals. He is the editor of the Soils section for the International Encyclopedia of Geography (Association of American Geographers) and a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. He is an expert in the soils and landforms of the Great Lakes region, and he is editor-in-chief of Michigan Geography and Geology (2012). His expertise on podzolization and pedoturbation has led him to publish numerous papers on these widespread soil processes.

Michael Thompson is a Professor of Soil Science at Iowa State University. For more than twenty years, he taught pedology and clay mineralogy courses, and for the past ten years he has taught courses in soil chemistry. Thompson's research has dealt with paleosols, soil organic matter, and the fate of actinides, heavy metals, and organic contaminants in waste-amended soils. His research seeks to identify the chemical and physical conditions that favor stability, transformations, and movement of soil organic matter, anthropogenic contaminants, and clay minerals in soils. He is a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America, the American Society of Agronomy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

PEOPLE SAY THAT I have self-confidence. Who knows?

When I began speaking out, I was a realist.

I knew the relentless and incompetent naysayers of the status quo would anxiously line up against me, and they have:

The politicians who talk a great game in campaigns—and play like total losers when they try to actually govern because they can’t govern; they don’t know how to govern.

The lobbyists and special interests with their hands in our pockets on behalf of their clients or others.

The members of the media who are so far lost when it comes to being fair that they have no concept of the difference between “fact” and “opinion.”

The illegal immigrants who have taken jobs that should go to people here legally, while over 20 percent of Americans are currently unemployed or underemployed. Believe me, they’re all over the place. I see them. I talk to them. I hug them. I hold them. They are all over the place.

Congress, which has been deadlocked for years and virtually unable to deal with any of our most pressing domestic problems, or even the most basic ones, such as passing a budget. Think of it: a little thing like passing the budget. They don’t even have a clue.

Meanwhile, the bedrock of this country—the middle class—and those 45 million Americans stuck in poverty have seen their incomes decline over the past 20 years. Understandably, their disenchantment and frustration at what’s happening grows every day, and it gets worse and worse and worse.

And even our lawyers and judges, the reflective “wise men,” have been stepping all over the US Constitution, the bulwark of our democracy. They have recklessly appointed themselves to be policy makers, because our actual elected officials are paralyzed by partisanship. They can’t move; they can’t act. They are totally impotent.

As for the presidency and the executive branch, the incompetence is beyond belief.

As I write this, Russian president Vladimir Putin is totally outmaneuvering our president by putting together a coalition in Syria that will make Putin the only effective leader in the world. He and his allies—most notably Iran—have positioned themselves exactly where President Obama and our military have failed miserably for years. They are total failures. They are not leaders. We are no longer a leader. Putin has become the leader, and it’s an embarassment to our country.

We’ve wasted literally trillions of dollars in the Middle East, with virtually nothing to show for it except for alienating our best ally, Israel. To make matters worse, we’ve negotiated a worthless and costly nuclear treaty with Iran (now Russia’s best friend) on the supposition that it will lead to greater harmony and world peace, which it won’t. It will lead to just the opposite.

The idea of American Greatness, of our country as the leader of the free and unfree world, has vanished.

Despite all of these challenges—and actually because of the challenges—I decided to do something about it. I couldn’t stand to see what was happening to our great country. This mess calls for leadership in the worst way. It needs someone with common sense and business acumen, someone who can truly lead America back to what has made us great in the past.

We need someone with a proven track record in business who understands greatness, someone who can rally us to the standard of excellence we once epitomized and explain what needs to be done.

When I started speaking out, I had no idea what the reaction would be. I know I’m a great builder, I’ve built buildings all over the world. I’ve had tremendous success. But I hadn’t fully exposed my political thoughts and ideas to restore America’s greatness.

I also knew that the Trump brand is one of the world’s great icons of quality and excellence. Everybody talks about it. Everybody knows about it. It’s very very special. I’m very proud of it. Our buildings and resorts now stand very proudly (and beautifully) all over the United States and in many other countries.

I started with the issue of illegal immigration, and proposed building a major wall that would be very high and completely impervious to the flood of immigrants who we don’t want or need here illegally. We love people coming in, but not when it’s done illegally.

Suddenly, Americans started to wake up to what was going on with regard to illegal immigration. Despite the large number of candidates who were running for the Republican nomination, what I was saying started to really hit home with people, and everybody picked it up and they picked it up gladly.

I started drawing crowds so large that we had to move our rallies into football stadiums and convention centers. The first national debate drew 24 million viewers, which set a record for cable television. Despite some of the ridiculous, antagonistic questions—or maybe because of them—I fought back as I always do and began to explain my vision. As a result, most people thought I won the debate.

People were applauding. All of a sudden, people who had never cared about elections or never voted were rushing to our rallies. The rallies became massive. The crowds were unbelievable. The enthusiasm was based on pure love and love of what we were doing.

The media, the politicians, and the so-called leaders of our country reacted in horror. But I persevered and went directly to the people, because I don’t need anyone’s financial support, nor do I need anyone’s approval of what I say or do. I just had to do the right thing. I had to do it. I had no choice. I see what’s happening to our country; it’s going to hell. I had to do it.

I have now begun to fill in some of the details of my vision. I’ve released a tax plan that gives the middle class and those with lower incomes a chance to keep more of what they earn, while restructuring how the richest Americans will be paying taxes.

I’ve committed to a truly more powerful military, one prepared and equipped to stand up to any and all of our foes. When we draw a line in the sand, it needs to mean something to all—especially our enemies.

I’ve introduced a whole new approach to job creation by encouraging companies to bring more of their jobs and manufacturing back to America (home where it belongs), along with the trillions of dollars currently being held in foreign banks overseas. We’re bringing that money back. It’s a massive amount of money. And guess what? Lots of good things are going to happen. They’re going to spend that money on roads, on bridges, on companies, on jobs. It’s going to be amazing.

I’ve explained why Obamacare is a costly, ludicrous solution to our health care woes and one which must be repealed and replaced with a much better option. We need to fix the problem by creating competition in the private sector between insurance companies, and by allowing patients to choose the family doctors they want. This will be a much better plan, a much less costly plan—better doctors, better service. It will be something really special. And think of it: the United States will save a fortune as a country. People will be better served. A combination that cannot be beat.

Competition is a magic word in education as well. Parents should have the right to choose the schools where their kids can get the best education. The weaker schools will be closed, and ineffective teachers will be fired. One-size-fits-all education—Common Core—is bad. It’s not going to happen. We don’t want our children to be educated from Washington. We want local education. Education should be locally based.

Domestically, we need to undertake a massive rebuilding of our infrastructure. Too many bridges have become dangerous, our roads are decaying and full of potholes, while traffic jams are costing millions in lost income for drivers who have jobs in congested cities. Public transit is overcrowded and unreliable and our airports must be rebuilt. You go to countries like China and many others and you look at their train systems and their public transport. It’s so much better. We’re like a third-world country.

I could go on and on regarding many of the ideas I’ve written about in this book, and more that will be forthcoming. But let me add that while my critics are pushing their policy agendas, the last thing we need are more plans that evaporate after the elections.

What we need is leadership that can deal with our mess and begin to apply practical solutions to our problems. My goal is not to design hundreds of pages of government regulation and red tape like others propose. We need to outline commonsense policies and then knock some heads together if necessary to make them work. The fact is we are over-regulated. People can’t move. They’re stymied. Companies can’t be built. We’re over-regulated.

I know how to deal with complex issues and how to bring together all the various elements necessary for success. I’ve done it for years and have built a great company and a massive net worth.

This book is designed to give the reader a better understanding of me and my ideas for our future. I’m a really nice guy, believe me, I pride myself on being a nice guy but I’m also passionate and determined to make our country great again.

It’s time we turn America around from despair and anger to joy and accomplishment. It can happen, and it will happen.

Our best days still lie ahead. There is so much untapped greatness in our country. We’re rich in natural resources, and we’re rich in human talent.

The book assures us that we are rightful inheritors of this knowledge, and then, step by step the author walks us through how to use his system. The learning is incremental, with exercises that build on accrued knowledge and make clear the questions and circumstances for which the reading of cards may be helpful.
This is no frivolous undertaking, as the book makes clear. The reading of cards must be approached with care and respect and intention for the highest good. While it is warm and eminently readable, the subject matter is approached with reverence. I loved that.
As someone who is more comfortable with words than pictures, and who finds Tarot an enigma, I love Lenormand because the cards are more language than image. The playing cards feel even more pure, organic, close to Source. This book is all the guide I need to be able to add cartomancy to my reading repertoire. This book has enriched and enhanced my ability as a reader, and I recommend it to novices and seasoned readers alike.

I found Joseph Magi's book to be endlessly interesting, informative, and entertaining. The well-written text briefly explains the Magi method in the context of fortune-telling through the centuries, and from there quickly goes into great detail on how to actually utilize the method itself.

It's clear that the author carries a thorough knowledge of the subject, and while it seems like it could take a lifetime to really master he nonetheless presents his teachings in a clear and concise way that can get you started as soon as you can get your hands on the necessary cards. Highly recommended!

I have worked with many playing card cartomancy systems and this is by far, one of the most spiritually dynamic system I've worked with. Joseph Magi runs a Facebook Study Group that allows you to practice what you've learned so you can master this system. He starts you off with cleansing your deck and this process alone will make you a believer!
