From Publishers Weekly
Szarkowski was director of photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art for 29 years, and soon he will be returning to it, this time as the subject of a retrospective exhibition traveling across the country. This book collects the exhibit's photographs as well as snippets from his correspondence, a chronology of his career up to this point and a critical biographic essay by Phillips, senior photography curator for San Francisco's MoMA. Before going to New York in 1962, Szarkowski was well known for two books, one on the architect Louis Sullivan (The Idea of Louis Sullivan) and one celebrating Minnesota's statehood centennial (The Face of Minnesota). Numerous images from those efforts are included here, and they stand the test of time, particularly the sweeping Minnesota prairie landscapes where the stripes of grass, hills and sky pile up to resemble stratified rock. During Szarkowski's years at New York's MoMA, he presided over many shows for photographers whose names are now more familiar than his, limiting his own ability to work; only two photos from that period, both of apple trees on his farm, appear here. Much of his post-MoMA work is of trees and barns, and though some of the images are arresting, few match the grandeur of his early output. The accompanying letters provide an intimate sense of his career development as well as his sense of humor and personal grace. In one, he writes, "Being alive is getting to be such an unexplainably enjoyable thing." This zest for existence is evident in the elegant photographs collected here. 84 tritone photos.

John Szarkowski: Photographs
By William L. Robinson
I have been a fan of Szarkowski ever since I discovered his work on Louis Sullivan's buildings in Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere. This is an excellent collection of a more personal nature. I really liked this book. This makes the third book of Szarkowski's photographs that I have added to my collection and I was not disappointed. His work is not greatly known outside of photography circles and that is a great loss.

Artful Photographs From a Keen Curator and Photographer
By Grady Harp
Everyone knows of John Szarkowski as the guru behind the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, but too few realize that beyond his scholarship and contribution to the placement of photography in an equal range as painting and sculpture, Szarkowski is a photographer of substance. This excellent book serves as a catalogue of a traveling exhibition of his works and it is quite revealing.

From elegant portraits such as the 1949 Robert Penn Warren example through his surveys of the natural phenomena of nature as he observes it, Szarkowski's eye focuses on the most mundane of images and from them creates masterworks. His preoccupation with trees is microscopically focused in a fascinating work entitled 'Graft', a grid of twelve images that reveal the arborist's magic of making a grafted tree.

Szarkowski's 'landscapes' of meadows, fields, and barns are luminous and endlessly fascinating to study. He creates naturally found still lifes from views through barn windows to trees and grasses outside. From this excellent sampling of his work and writing (and the accompanying fine essay by Sandra Phillips) this book justifies his placement in the realm of exceptional American photographers. Competent... not inspired
By TimoWhee
John Szarkowski made his mark as an observer of photographs and photography, not as a practitioner. His contribution to the field of photography was huge. Read his books of criticism and you will see. They are elegant and informative.
